Product Description

* Two of Cajun's most famous albums return to the Ace catalogue all newly remastered and with four bonus titles. In the mid 1960s Cajun music was in danger of stagnating, having become heavily influenced by country, western swing and pop music. Dewey Balfa persuaded Floyd Soileau to record him and his brothers performing a more traditional form of the music from several decades earlier.

* "Play Traditional Cajun Music" came out in 1965, with a second volume following in 1974. In making these records the Balfas and Soileau preserved music that was in danger of being entirely forgotten.

* This release also includes four non-LP single sides and has been freshly packaged with a new sleeve note by Cajun expert Ann Savoy, plus a new selection of photographs and lyrics in French with an English translation.

Format: Audio CD
In 1964, Dewey Balfa was invited to play the Newport Folk Festival along with Gladius Thibodeaux and Vinus LeJeune, a performance which put Cajun music on the map. Having formed The Balfa Brothers Band a year later with three of his brothers (in total the family comprised nine children, six boys and three girls) plus Hadley Fontenot, in 1967 he returned to Newport with the band and again caused a sensation.

The recordings on this CD represent the contents of two of the band's LPs, one from their earliest days in 1965, which for some reason appear as tracks 13 to 24, and the other from their second album from 1974, by which time sadly brothers Will and Rodney had been killed in a road accident, so the remaining band members were joined by Marc Savoy and Rodney's son, Tony.

Many of the tracks reflect Dewey's view of traditional Cajun, being mostly string-based, with the fiddle prominent and the rhythm knocked out on the petit fer, or triangle, but some also feature accordion, possibly the instrument nowadays most associated with Cajun, ironically given Dewey's original view, although one of his striking characteristics was his pragmatism in the face of change and lack of chauvinism, acknowledging the virtues of other traditions whilst striving to ensure that his own was provided a firm platform for survival.

What stands out about the package, apart from the privilege of hearing some of the best songs Cajun has to offer, many of which are still being played by bands in Louisiana today, is the inclusion of the lyrics, together with a translation from the sometimes impenetrable (to my ears) Cajun French.

After searching for many years for the soundtrack to Southern Comfort that has never been released yet,you can get Ry Cooders tracks on his cd Music by Ry Cooder at least.then i discovered this ordered it from the good old U S of A. I only really play the tracks from Southern Comfort tracks 1,2,5,23 ,compare this to the band playing in the movie and theres no difference at all superb even though i only play the 4 tracks. Also check out the bands history on the net it is well worth knowing the history of this fantastic band ian
