Richard is a Tenured Associate Professor and Lead Animation Instructor with Moraine Valley Community College. Since 2005, he has worked as an Authorized Autodesk Certified Instructor for 3ds max. Richard has worked at Art Institute in Ft. Lauderdale, Keiser College, Palm Beach Community College and started the SE Florida 3ds Max User's group. Outside of the classroom, Richard has produced numerous forensic and game animations through his company, VirtualONE, Inc. In addition to his professional and academic experiences, Richard is a frequent presenter at SIGGRAPH.
It covers a lot of good topics but working out what you are supposed to be doing can be time consuming and frustrating because they have not ensured the explanations are in step with the instructions. The instructions are ultimately correct but it is not well written. You also cannot download the following files from the site:
Ch6 - which covers Ragdoll and the havoc physics engine which was removed from 3Ds as of 2012. 2013 uses a ragdoll in Mass FX so this chapter is out of date unless 2011 or previous is your thing. Ch10 - Skinning, Envelopes and Vertex Weighting. This is essential stuff if you want to learn to animate your own models. Ch11 - Animating Cameras
I don't know why the materials for the last 2 are unavailable as the contact us link on their website brings up a page unavailable message. Maybe they got fed up with people complaining. This book is copyright 2012 so I don't get why they haven't sorted this out or don't appear to be trying to. I feel a bit ripped off. I have contacted Focal Press Direct and will update if they say anything interesting. For now I'd look elsewhere if you are learning animation.
ISBN 0240817303 (Tradigital 3ds Max: A CG Animator's Guide to Applying the Classic Principles of Animation) is the simplest possible step-by-step tutorial for anyone who wants to begin learning animation starting from the basics by illustrated examples using the 3ds Max software. It does not explain the basics of 3D nor perspective that belong to the 3D modelling part of 3ds Max, and can be found in similar books like "3D Motion Graphics for 2D Artists: Conquering the Third Dimension" under ISBN: 0240815335, and also by Focal Press. Almost all examples are illustrated by full or partial screen snapshots of the program part being explained. This title shares many similarities with the introductory part of the industry standard "Inside AutoCAD", and it is equally useful.
The book is perfect for readers seeking easy access to the subject. The content is clear and self-explanatory. There is not much to read, but to browse through the illustrations in color only, and accompanied by supporting text almost always shorter than a page. Almost all tutorial pages contain one or more illustrations. The book - like all published by Focal Press - is very well done graphically and soft-bound. Every illustration is perfect. The quality of printing on semi-glossy paper is superb. The covers are coated, stain resistant, and strong.

5.0 out of 5 starsGets you started but doesn't get too advanced~4 Feb 2012
First, you probably need some advanced math (calculus at the least I would say) and some decent programming knowledge to really make the most of this book. But it's a great start for those with budding knowledge of 3-d animation. This is not going to make you into the next Pixar animator, but it's a good resource for students or young professionals, or those who are looking to update their knowledge with some of the more recent animation programs.
There are around 270 pages with full color pictures. The content is good, though there is a rather... interesting naked bird lady in the gallery... Just be aware in case that would shock your sensibilities! The author teaches at a community college, and that's what this book has the feel of. A community college text for those 2 year associate degrees in computer animation. It's enough to get you comfortable with the skills, but not really enough to get you working on major video games or films.

5.0 out of 5 starsGreat book! All you need to know.24 Nov 2011
I loved this book. What it does is to guide you through the animation basics and the way it hepls you start working with computer animation software. This is not an advanced user's book and it will not give you higly advanced tips... but still this book goes very far. It is also a great book for those (the majority today) who work with CGI but never had the opportunity to do traditional animation (as this book is a great bridge between both techniques).
