This expansion set requires the original The Settlers of Catan (New Edition) (or old edition if you have it). It includes rules for 4 "Variants" of the game, including Catan for Two! [The other three variants are: Friendly Robber (no robbing on 2 points); Harbour Master (like Largest Army for Harbours); and Event Cards (virtual dice with extra, er, events)]

The main expansion however is the five Scenarios:
The Fishermen of Catan; The Rivers of Catan (not one but two!); The Caravans; Barbarian Attack; Traders and Barbarians (rebuilding Catan after the aforementioned attack)
You are recommended to play the scenarios in order, but you can do what you like! I have been playing Fishermen (which works well with the two player variant).
Catan fans will be thinking, "Hang on a minute! I can buy the Fishermen expansion seperately for a couple of quid, and the River for another two quid!" Well, Yes, that's true. But here you get a lake for the fishermen, and two rivers for the Rivers scenario and frankly lots of extra bits and excellent wooden pieces: the camels, wagons, the barbarians, bridges, knights on horseback (with which to fight the barbarian hordes, of course). Did I mention the event cards too? I already had a pack but that was cool because I added the two packs together (it's ok, they have different backs!) and so we got a "more random" fall of the "dice". [Sorry about the speech marks but I think they are justified]

Anyway, the only other thing to mention is that you can't mix these scenarios with Cities and Knights (yet!) See the official Catan website for more details.

Sometimes with Catan, if you make a mistake at the beginning your game is all but over. These new Scenarios keep it interesting and certainly with the Fishermen you can buy yourself out of trouble with fish! Cool!

To summarise, a fab set that makes a great game even better. (I just love the wooden pieces) A perfect gift for someone who has Catan and hasn't played it for a while.

This is a superb expansion pack for the the original Settlers of Catan board game. There are five new scenarios, all completely different and great fun. They feature camels, barbarians, wagons and bridges amongst other things. Each scenario has its own rules but these are quite easy to get to grips with. There are some optional rule variations too, like the 'friendly robber' which does not affect your resources if you are on the lowest level of victory points, and you can use cards instead of dice to determine what happens each turn (although we always find that the vagaries of the dice throw is one of the key elements of the game).

In a nutshell there is loads of variety of here and you can mix and match the rule variations with the scenarios to create your favourite version. A great addition to the basic game.

Great for anyone who wants proper 2-player capability. We 'randomise' the positioning of the fake players so as to add variability to each game. Plus 2-player is backward compatible for Basic Settlers & Seafarers expansion! :) We give cards initially for both starting settlments (giving up to 6 resources to start); then only applying the 7-roll to maximum cards after two rounds of play (thereby meaning you don't lose half your starting cards if a 7 rolls straight away).

The scenarios give loads of variety ... go get it! :)

Superb tile-laying, settlement-building game - whether played as a two-person game or with more. Relatively simple to get the hang of, but does not get stale when played time and time again - ones game playing skill just develops to make the game more and more satisfying. No two games are ever the same. Each game also does not take too long, especially once you get used to it, so perfect in an evening as a quick game, or can play multiple rounds to extend it. The mini expension does add quite nicely - and seamlessly to the main game

My children and their friends are entranced by this game and spend hours playing, although the build quality could be better.

I like the simple mods like cards instead of dice, and the harbourmaster plus fishermen extension. Expensive but adds totally new dimensions to the game. I've now just ordered the Seafarers extension, too!

Good to play for 2.
Has the fisherman expansion for more justice of the coastline lands.
Good to diverse the game, without complicating the rules.

This is a brilliant addition. We had made out own rules so we could play it for two.
Now we don't have to and have had some excellent and exciting games.

Great game. Quick to learn but with clear potential for hours of fun exploring the ins and outs. Also plenty of add-ons so it doesn't become stale.
