My little girls loves making the pictures. The illustrations range from the very simple/obvious to position (taxi and bus for example) to the slightly more abstract (the boat in particular). The style of the pictures is beautifully old-fashioned and distinctive, and the little wooden tray is sweet too (and helps keep things aligned for easily-frustrated children).

Handpainted pictures on the blocks look rustic rather than the slick and perfect pictures you get on most toys these days. However, viewed through a child's eyes, they are colourful and jolly.
Bought for my nephew's first birthday, 4 blocks is a manageable starting point for 'construction' which he is happily using this toy to do!
