Book Description

20 Mar 2003
One of BBC2's conspicuous successes of the last four years has been the ten minute slot called Trade Secrets created and produced by Maverick Television. Each week seasoned professionals from key occupations give hints and tips developed through a lifetime of doing the job. Each tip uses material everyone has around the house and either saves money or costs nothing. The book will contain over 5000 hints and tips (an additional 2000 from the first edition). Each series of tips will come from an individual who will be mentioned and the book will be divided into subjects. There will be sixty line drawings in a second colour to illustrate entries as appropriate and a comprehensive cross-referenced index.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gold mine of information 22 May 2003
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
In a time when people have become increasingly specialised in what they do, with certificate education rife and compartmental careers the norm, this book is a must-have. In the past, parents, grandparents and even great-grandparents would have given you a big chunk of this sort of everyday information, which they themselves would have gleaned from a rich and diverse experience of life. But those ties have gradually eroded away. Luckily this book fills the gap.

Maybe that's all nostalgic nonsense. Either way, this book is an indispensable guide to mastering the finer elements of those everyday activities.

Format:Paperback
I originally thought this book would be a 'small' helpful book with some handy hints and tips in it. It's actually A4 size with excellent quality paper and printing and, I think, absolutely wonderful. There are hundreds and hundreds of really interesting 'facts' and very 'handy hints and tips' on quite a wide variety of subjects. To me, it's a kind of information and reference book that I will be using again and again and again for information on a whole load of subjects.
I'm really glad that I bought it and I know that I'll use it often. I would recommend it to anyone who is thinking about buying it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Consult within upon anything. 19 Mar 2008
Format:Paperback
Such a useful book.

One of the previous reviewers thought it should have been broken up into several smaller books, I could not disagree more. True, this is a large book, but it's well set out, clearly written and is a font of good old fashioned advice.
My copy always sits on a shelf in my living room, and is my first port of call for a simple answer to most household queries. When I moved to America, it was one of the first things I packed.

I suppose that some of the information I may never actually use, but like the television series this book came from, it is all fascinating stuff.

Does what it says on the cover "Everthing you will ever need to know about everything!" Really good and we have referred to it quite frequently.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very good "extra" - not to be used as a basic 31 Oct 2003
Format:Hardcover
Someone kindly gave me this book just recently and I groaned somewhat, having already invested in the weighty "Dr Sears Baby Book" (very good, btw!) and various other bits and pieces but - and this is the thing - it doesn't do any of the preachy "tis is the way you must make your baby sleep" type stuff - the kind of thing you seem to be forced in to making huge momentous decisions about, or else you're a bad mother.

No, in fact it's just list after list of distilled handy tips from those in the know who've been doing this stuff for years. I picked up one lovely hint which I'm now doing - taking a soft toy to bed with you for a few weeks before the birth and sleeping with it close to your skin - that way it smells of you when baby is born, and acts as even more of a comforter.

Anyway - lots of good stuff like that. It's a bit big and heavy, I think they could probably have done with breaking it up in to sections and selling it as a smaller set of books to be honest - but still worth a look. Not, as I say, as your main reference book though.
