Book Description

28 Jun 2001

One of BBC2's conspicuous successes of the last four years has been the ten minute slot called Trade Secrets created and produced by Maverick Television. Each week seasoned professionals from key occupations give hints and tips developed through a lifetime of doing the job. Each tip uses material everyone has around the house and either saves money or costs nothing.

The book will contain over 5000 hints and tips (an additional 2000 from the first edition). Each series of tips will come from an individual who will be mentioned and the book will be divided into subjects. There will be sixty line drawings in a second colour to illustrate entries as appropriate and a comprehensive cross-referenced index.

This is a most unusual book, given that it is page after page of paragraphs of between one and three lines in length. Each trade secret is like a (very) short story that makes you say "Of course" or "What a brilliant idea" or "Why didn't I think of that". It is impossible not to interrupt other people and say "Listen to this..." and read out another gem of information. I just wish I had an eidetic memory.

I was looking for a good coffee table book for a wedding gift when I stumbled on this eccentric and eclectic mix of advice. From 'How to make your dog smell nicer' through 'When playing in a rock concert ensure you look in the eyes of the audience when you walk onto stage (don't stare at the floor and pretend they're not there!)' to 'How to conceive a boy / girl' - this book has a plethora of concise snippets to pick up and put down in tandem with your coffee / toilet lid. Addictive. Buy it now.

I had been dying for this book to come out as I watched a few of the BBC 2 programmes. It was everything that I had hoped for and much more - there were so many simple hints on how to cut corners and help yourself. It made me laugh in so many places, as it is not only informative, it is also very amusingly written. I would defy anyone, from any profession not to find it incredibly helpful. Even the Queen would find it useful as there were hints on giving birth! Fabulous!!!

I couldn't believe it when I saw this book. Some of the hints look a bit obscure but we have had a laugh leafing through them all. Some of the others I wish I knew years ago. What amazes me is how on earth people discover these hints & secrets. Ideal to keep in the bathroom to flick through!!
