Reviews

From Gwyneth & Shakira's Personal Trainer.

The purpose of this Mat Workout DVD is to re-engineer your muscular structure, wake up your accessory muscles, pull in your larger muscles and shift your shape into something you never knew you could achieve. The DVD is the perfect companion to my Dance Cardio Workout DVD but equally can be done on its own - the moves are easy to follow and provide amazing results. No specialist equipment required--Tracy recommends weight exercises for the arms to be performed using a 500ml bottle of water in each hand.

"Truly is a miracle... you will see the results you never thought possible." Gwyneth Paltrow

"I love Tracy Anderson's Method! Her approach to exercise is smart, creative and empowering. I believe Tracy can transform any woman." Shakira

Easy to follow. No specialist equipment required. Provides amazing results.

I found Tracy Anderson's Dance Cardio DVD to be a really effective workout (if not necessarily the most enjoyable), so I decided to try the Mat workout too. Tracy recommends that both done together 4-6 times a week will give you a 'teeny tiny dancer's body', and with clients like Gwyneth Paltrow and Madonna proving her point, who wouldn't be tempted?

There is no doubt that the exercises in this DVD are effective. This is a hardcore toning DVD which will get every part of your body, and as Tracy advocates toning the smaller accessory muscles, you may even ache in places you didn't know you had! The DVD is set out in the following way:

5 minute 'stretch' warm-up
Standing leg toning exercises (you will need a chair for support)
Standing ab exercises
Two sets of arm exercises, one including light weights, one without (you may think, as I did, that working your arms with no weights would be easy - but you'd be very wrong indeed!)
Floor leg/bum exercises
Floor abs
Cooldown (a welcome addition as her Cardio Dance DVD didn't include one!)

Each section is around 5-10 minutes long and consists of Pilates-based stretching and toning movements (I'd personally describe them as Pilates on acid!) Although the exercises are hard, they are changed frequently. The music and general ambience of the DVD manage to make it a strangely relaxing workout; 'strangely' because you are actually working extremely hard throughout.

So far, so good - but one of the unfortunate downsides to this DVD is Tracy's lack of instruction. She tends to move on to the next exercise without warning, which is a pain when you're on the floor doing abs and need to know when to change sides!

I've done this DVD a total of 8 times, at twice a week, which is at least half of what Tracy Anderson recommends (4-6 times per week). Don't know if I'm qualified to say yet that it works as well as she promises (my fault perhaps), but I am beginning to see a difference, especially around the waist and outer thighs. The standing abs section at first seems like something totally made-up, but after a while you get the gist, and I must say that it is shaping up my stomach area. The mat abs section of the DVD is really effective too. All in all with these exercises you feel the burn, and in the areas that you might'nt have previously been able to get to (the accessory muscles as she mentions.) Be prepared to work with this one -- I do Pilates too and this made me sweat more. What makes this fun is that the exercises are different from the usual and the whole routine is fluid, helped by the calming background music. As for Tracy's pouting, well all I can say is that I've seen worse -- and who cares if this works and she whips you into shape? Must do 4 times per week! Then I'll come back and give another review, hopefully from the comfort of my size-10 jeans!

I have been doing this dvd from 4-6 times per week for nearly three years now. I have a petite figure which is prone to bulking with excercise esp around thighs/calf muscles. I used to run run for hours about six times per week and be nearly crying with frustration at th fact I was putting on weight and ending up with huge legs despite all my efforts that was until I got my hands on this dvd. It really does work like a miricle but you have to do it 4-6 times per week. Once you get through the first two weeks the results I found were nothing short of a miricle. I had family asking what I was doing , people asking if i'd lost weight and commenting on how toned and tiny my legs were. Even my calf muscles which I thought were genetically big amazingly pulled in and began to look long and lean and toned. Even my ankles look different, more defined and tiny. My arms are so tight and small I look like a professional ballet dancer!. Clothes I never used to be able to wear I now can my whole figure has changed to something I never thought it could be. I even have those little ridges on my tummy at the bottom!. The only excercise i do literally is this dvd and now i have it in my daily routine like brushing my teeth or washing my hair because it changes really changes your life! . I can believe all the years I wasted time doing running and callenetics and never feeling happy with my figure when i could have just been doing this!. I have also noticed I can eat quit a lot and not put weight on. Ever since I have been doing this dvd my weight dropped initially then over two and a half years has been totally stable which is amazing cosidering my weight used to yo yo all the time even when running 6 times a week!.Read more ›

It's about time Tracy Anderson's Mat Workout became available over here, as it was designed to be used in tandem with her dance cardio workout. But for those people who really couldn't get on with her cardio method (although I am a huge fan), don't be put off from trying this workout if you're looking to inject some variety into your standard non-aerobic routines.

This workout is excellent: Anderson uses exercises and movements that have traditionally not been used in standard workouts. Forget lunges, squats and push-ups--you won't see them here. Instead you use very precise movements which are almost like a fusion of ballet, Pilates and Callanetics (for those who remember Callan Pinkney from the 80's and early 90's!). It is intensive and challenging but I find it very relaxing to do at the same time because you're not throwing yourself around. And unlike the cardio routine, you only need a minimum amount of room. It does take some getting used to, and Anderson doesn't score that highly on the instructional and even repetition of exercises on both sides of the body, but if you're sensible and used to working out, you really can 'modulate' the workout to work for you. And the arm section is incredible: I have never done an arm workout like it. This section--with and without weights--is worth the cost of the DVD alone. And the bottom line is that if you're willing to give time to it, and its upkeep, this routine works. Or at least, it works for me. After reaching a kind of stasis over the last couple of years, even exercising vigorously three times a week, I had half-resigned myself to living with a figure I wasn't too comfy with. Anderson's DVD's (I own both her cardio DVD's and this and her post-pregnancy DVD) have completely revitalised my workouts and my body shape.
