I found Tracy Anderson's Dance Cardio DVD to be a really effective workout (if not necessarily the most enjoyable), so I decided to try the Mat workout too. Tracy recommends that both done together 4-6 times a week will give you a 'teeny tiny dancer's body', and with clients like Gwyneth Paltrow and Madonna proving her point, who wouldn't be tempted?

There is no doubt that the exercises in this DVD are effective. This is a hardcore toning DVD which will get every part of your body, and as Tracy advocates toning the smaller accessory muscles, you may even ache in places you didn't know you had! The DVD is set out in the following way:

5 minute 'stretch' warm-up
Standing leg toning exercises (you will need a chair for support)
Standing ab exercises
Two sets of arm exercises, one including light weights, one without (you may think, as I did, that working your arms with no weights would be easy - but you'd be very wrong indeed!)
Floor leg/bum exercises
Floor abs
Cooldown (a welcome addition as her Cardio Dance DVD didn't include one!)

Each section is around 5-10 minutes long and consists of Pilates-based stretching and toning movements (I'd personally describe them as Pilates on acid!) Although the exercises are hard, they are changed frequently. The music and general ambience of the DVD manage to make it a strangely relaxing workout; 'strangely' because you are actually working extremely hard throughout.

So far, so good - but one of the unfortunate downsides to this DVD is Tracy's lack of instruction. She tends to move on to the next exercise without warning, which is a pain when you're on the floor doing abs and need to know when to change sides! On that note, in some sections Tracy's repetitions are uneven so you'll work out one side of your body more than the other; something to look out for if you do intend to do this DVD the recommended 4-6 times per week.

I'd recommend this - it's very different from the glut of toning-with-weights DVDs on the market whilst also being more hardcore than most toning DVDs, and for most people other than the advanced exerciser it would be something to work up to. I can also imagine that most people would see fantastic results if done often enough. If you're a beginner though, be mindful of the fact that you won't be given a great deal of instruction and that Tracy's counting can be somewhat erratic!

It's about time Tracy Anderson's Mat Workout became available over here, as it was designed to be used in tandem with her dance cardio workout. But for those people who really couldn't get on with her cardio method (although I am a huge fan), don't be put off from trying this workout if you're looking to inject some variety into your standard non-aerobic routines.

This workout is excellent: Anderson uses exercises and movements that have traditionally not been used in standard workouts. Forget lunges, squats and push-ups--you won't see them here. Instead you use very precise movements which are almost like a fusion of ballet, Pilates and Callanetics (for those who remember Callan Pinkney from the 80's and early 90's!). It is intensive and challenging but I find it very relaxing to do at the same time because you're not throwing yourself around. And unlike the cardio routine, you only need a minimum amount of room. It does take some getting used to, and Anderson doesn't score that highly on the instructional and even repetition of exercises on both sides of the body, but if you're sensible and used to working out, you really can 'modulate' the workout to work for you. And the arm section is incredible: I have never done an arm workout like it. This section--with and without weights--is worth the cost of the DVD alone. And the bottom line is that if you're willing to give time to it, and its upkeep, this routine works. Or at least, it works for me. After reaching a kind of stasis over the last couple of years, even exercising vigorously three times a week, I had half-resigned myself to living with a figure I wasn't too comfy with. Anderson's DVD's (I own both her cardio DVD's and this and her post-pregnancy DVD) have completely revitalised my workouts and my body shape. I can finally get back into clothes that have been too tight for three years (and more), and the feeling is incredible. I finally feel as though I own my body again. And that, surely, is the whole point of a truly successful workout.

The Tracy Anderson Method - Mat Workout [DVD] [2009]

This DVD is a great change to all the other fitness DVDs. I love the fact that there is little instruction and counting - you can just get on with it peacefully without all the banter and the music is good. However due to the lack of instruction, I agree that it is no good for the inexperienced exerciser. What is great about this DVD is that the "rotations" hits areas that other DVDs don't. I do alot of running and also other fitness DVDs (Davina etc )and have found that I have become very bulky with muscle (especially the front of my thighs and triceps). I personally find this unattractive on a woman. Tracy's mat programme is hitting spots that I didn't know I had - like top and side of bottom / waist and inside and back of legs. Having only done it a few times I can see I am changing shape already - a much more feminine line and I am becoming far more flexible. The arm workout is hard - but I totally agree with her ethos of not using heavy weights - again no bulk and big triceps - just long / lean and strong. I am so impressed I am going to tackle her cardio workouts... despite the mixed reviews.
