4.0 out of 5 stars Tracks to Disaster, 28 May 2004
This review is from: Tracks to Disaster (Paperback)
The book contains short stories of different railway disasters. The author takes you though the preceding events and leading up to the different railway disasters. He uses known facts, accident reports and inquiries. You feel you living the life of the people who were directly involved with the incident.
The book is very well written and gives lots of pictures and diagrams.

It is amazing how railway men and women who have been working on the tracks for years, decades even and have a moment lapse of concentration can have such disastrous consequences. It also highlights the problem of complex signalling and how signalling and railway rules and regulations throughout the UK are not uniform and can be very often confusing for drivers. As trains go faster and more frequent, this will increase the margin for error. However despite of this, travelling on the railways is considered one of the safest modes of transport.

A very good read!

This review is from: Tracks to Disaster (Hardcover)
Oh, dear. Adrian Vaughan, railway historian extraordinaire, has obviously rushed this one out in a hurry. If not exactly under-researched, certainly a bit patchy. Curious choice of accidents to detail as well, many minor ones seem to be here for little more than comic relief and there are some big omissions. Plus which, Vaughan was a signalman and that's where you'd think his expertese would be, rather than telling us about, for example, the Kings Cross Fire. So not really in keeping with his fine tradition of highly readable railway histories. A rush job, and it shows.

Contents of book more technical than I expected so not really my cup of tea but well written and very informative all the same.
