From the Author

Concerning the javelin event
Most of my coaching experience (38 years) has been in the state of Illinois on the high school level. The javelin is not a part of our track and field program. I am presently coaching the jumps, sprints and relays on the collegiate level. Since this book is basically a survival guide for coaches on the high school level I did not feel that it was my bounden duty to include the javelin. My book's major mission is to assist coaches who are without facilities, equipment, assistant coaches or budget. I feel my book accomplishes that objective. I have read 300 books on track and field and none of them have covered EVERY aspect of track and field from A to Z. I wrote 400 pages and my editor cautioned me not write any further.I regret that you have negative feelings about my book, but I wrote what I could within the parameters that I was given.

I'm completely amazed the author failed to provide any Javelin coverage! I can see the justification for leaving out Hammer coverage, but the javelin?! While I found the Certificates & Forms material to be a bonus, this book isn't worth $32.95. There are far better books out there for half the price.

I liked the practice sessions/periods broken up. We do not have indoor track and I was wondering how to use the practice sessions when we start March 8, practice for about 3 to 4 weeks and then have meets on Tues. and Sat. till the middle of May and then have our District meet?

As a Masters athlete, as well as a sometimes assistant coach, I have found this book to be of immense value. Coach Wallace has taken such technical subjects as periodization of training and exercise physiology and made them accessable to the layperson. From event-specific training plans to unique solutions for performance problems, this book is a tremendous resouce. I highly recommend "Track & Field Coach's Survival Guide" for coaches and athletes.
