Book Description

Tracing Your Liverpool Ancestors' gives a fascinating insight into everyday life in the Liverpool area over the past four centuries. Aimed primarily at the family and social historian, Mike Royden's highly readable guide introduces readers to the wealth of material available on the city’s history and its people. In a series of short, information-packed chapters he describes, in vivid detail, the rise of Liverpool through shipping, manufacturing and trade from the original fishing village to the cosmopolitan metropolis of the present day. Throughout he concentrates on the lives of the local people – on their experience as Liverpool developed around them. He looks at their living conditions, at poverty and the laboring poor, at health and the ravages of disease, at the influence of religion and migration, at education and the traumatic experience of war. He shows how the lives of Liverpudlians changed over the centuries and how this is reflected in the records that have survived. His useful book is a valuable tool for anyone researching the history of the city or the life of an individual ancestor.

If you have family connections with Liverpool this is the book for you. You can read it cover to cover or just dip into it (good index) to find the subject area you are interested in. Chapters on every feature of Liverpool life and an appendix crammed full of good sources.

Bang up to date with lots of useful web sites as well as postal addresses for sources. It will remain on my bookshelf.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pocket size and packed with information 23 Sept. 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
A book which is extremely informative and also easy to read, divided into two sections entitled 'Work and Economy' and 'Society'. Each sub section is sub divided into chapters covering subjects such as the 'Rise of the Port' and 'Religion and Migration'. Five appendices give further information on how to research and the location of archives. There is also a good index.

This is an A5 sized book with good quality printed pages carrying a few illustrations or photographs. The real joy of this book is that it is packed with information at the end of each sub section and in the appendices but in a format which is easy to take to an archive for reference. This book is a perfect complement to the title 'Liverpool 1660-1750' Liverpool 1660-1750: People, Prosperity and Power
