Product Description

Synopsis

For historians, the records produced by government and the courts, and held by the Public Record Office, can provide a treasure trove of information. This guide helps readers find their way through the census and service records, the wills, the law suits, the court rolls and the hearth taxes, where traces of the lives of their individual forebears may still be found. This fifth edition has been revised and updated to include: new accessions - many service records from the World War I and the Army, Navy and Merchant Marine forces; more complete descriptions, particularly of the early, legal and manorial records; changes caused by the opening of the Family Records Centre and the move of the older records from Chancery Lane to Kew; and illustrations of key sources.

4.0 out of 5 stars NOT JUST FOR VISITORS TO THE PRO, 22 Dec 2005
By A Customer
This review is from: Tracing Your Ancestors in the Public Record Office (PRO Handbooks) (Paperback)
A bad title as this book is a great introduction to family hostory. It has a PRO bias but general researchers will find it valuable even if they never go anywhere near Kew.

5.0 out of 5 stars A useful and official guidebook to Engish family history records, 21 Sep 2008
By Gary Shea - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Tracing Your Ancestors in the Public Record Office (PRO Handbooks) (Paperback)
This book is a guide published by the records office. Exhaustively it covers what English public records are available and as it takes a genealogical slant it endeavors to cover what's of interest in the records.
