Poppy, nearly 14, is a flower-girl - so-called because all the strong and remarkable women on her father's side of the family are named after flowers. Staying with her great aunt Amelanchier (the admirable Lanky), who runs a donkey sanctuary, Poppy wants to find out more about these women and particularly the mystery of her missing grandmother, Sorrel, who her father doesn't talk about. Starting with her great-great-grandmother Tamarisk at school, Poppy experiences sudden ghostly `time-flashes' where she sees and hears scenes from her family's past. Then there's great-grandmother Hebe and her conscientious objector husband, Paul. From these traces of her ancestors, Poppy is able to discover more about their lives and understand her own. At the same time she is forging a very special friendship with Kane, a boy helping at the donkey sanctuary. The donkeys too have their own characters and are integral to the story.
Beautifully-written, with style, insight and humour, all these threads are woven into a powerful and satisfying read that also makes you think about things. This is a lovely book and you don't need to be a teenager to enjoy it!
