Product Description

CD Description

CYNIC is back! When the legendary US band announced their reunion in 2007, all hell broke loose and their dedicated fans as well as the press sang their praises. Traced in Air comes with all the trademarks that gained the band their well deserved cult-status with only one album released: Extreme Metal riffing is fused with the rhythmical intricacy of Jazz and the melodic complexity of Progressive Rock. Traced in Air witnesses the band ascending to an even higher spiritual level of musicianship, which reveals all their accumulated experiences and accomplishments of years spent composing and performing in other constellations. Mathematical melodies pearl over oscillating soundscapes in glorious moments of pain and joy joining somewhere out in space: a monument of pure fascination!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent progressive music 14 Jun 2009
Format:Audio CD
Firstly I really like that album so sorry if I sound somewhat sicophantic!
This is the second album of Cynic coming after their recent reunion, a band generally described as progressive metal which I guess is a rather good description although it relinquishes to mention so much of the depths of this band. It would be easy to not bother checking this out thinking "Oh progressive metal, more showing off from dream theater clones" but dont let that be the case. This album is acutely musical, warm and textured. There is no showing off here!
Here is a breakdown of the tracks:

01. Nunc Fluens - This isa complex soundscape that develops rhythmically. Nicly put together and introduces alot about the ablum in a fairly brief way and takes us to the start of the album proper with aplomb.

02. The Space for This - Starting with a soft guitar part this quickly develops into an exciting piece of music. The musicianship is excellent and the use of varied textures marked here with the regular return of the guitar part.

03. Evolutionary Sleeper - This is for me the standout track. I absolutly love the complexity of the guitar and rhythm section put against the tend and beautiful melody of the evolutionary sleeper. The solo is inspired, this really showcases the bands ability to move from energetic to delecate.

04. Integral Birth - This has a deffinate lilt of the classical composition around it. Which is interesting because the lyrical ideas are deffinately very philisophical in their inception. The hand over to the next song is very striking here with Integral Birth fading and as the volume rises from this fall the next track ensues.

05. The Unknown Guest - Another cleverly textured and contrasting track.

4.0 out of 5 stars classy 5 Jun 2009
By sean paul mccann VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
it sometimes defies logic that cynic are deemed death metal, the similarities between this album and hate eternals 'i,monarch' can be counted on one finger, however, cynic have something that so many bands wish to have, the balance between dark and light, their sound is technical, yet the songs are allowed to breathe and express themselves, cynic have the knowledge, they are at times simply breathtaking.
Clean vocals are the main type expressed here with the odd harsh bellow thrown in and the guitars plunge from heavy to light and fast as a coyote in freefall.
The one main fault is that is all over so soon, but i have pressed play again many times with this album and i recommend it to you, dont be a balloon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another metal classic 20 Feb 2009
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Cynic have done it again. Following their cult classic Focus, Traced in Air basically picks up where the first left off all those years ago. After a few listens, i am tempted to go as far as say that this may even surpass Focus - it seems to have more variety packed into it's short running time, and there are some exellent melodies on there too. Integral Birth is the highlight for me, moulding technical ability with an excellent chord structure and melodic chorus.

If you like your metal technical, thoughtful, and just downright unique, then get this album. You won't be disappointed.

Every track on this album is a classic as a stand alone track and as part of the flow of a great record. The soft and interesting chord progressions and chord orientated riffs paired with the soothing effect-enhanced vocals make this a relaxing and dreamlike listen that never gets old. Although Cynic are grouped in with death metal bands it is difficult to see what would put this album in that category. I would recommend it for fans of technical music (which includes a lot of death metal fans) rather than fans of heavy music (this album is not heavy). Or anyone looking for something to space out to. The melodies have a melancholy edge that never goes too far giving the album an emotional depth that is not overbearing or patronising to the listener but sets it aside from a lot of other technical music that can lack this dimension.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent album 11 July 2009

This is my first contact with Cynic music. Album "Traced In The Air" is very good mix of metal, jazz and "pink floyd" feeling and is not only for metal fans.
Highly recommended for all true music lovers.
