Toxicology 16 Feb 2007
By Jane Aland VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
This anthology features 26 short stories, and is a great place to sample the mad world of Steve Aylett. From the story of a criminals who get too attached to their masks, to that of a man who tries to literally remove his stress by excising the offending brain matter only for it to grow into a rampaging monster, this is wild stuff. While the stories are very short they are incredibly dense with intricate wordplay and mind-bending imagery, while a strong sense of humour and a sharp satire at the expense of the police saturates the book. A heady read that can occasionally feel as though it's a little too intense, but as one of the characters within says: "Most books are so well written they barely have any effect on the reader's senses" - well, this one will leave your head spinning.

All story collections tend to vary in quality from tale to tale. No exception here. Some are good whilst others are distinctly lacklustre. Personal favourites for me included "Gigantic" which seethed with anger behind the imagery, and "If Neil Armstrong Was Interesting" very funny stuff. Aylett's writing is an acquired taste and if nothing else you can honestly say that nobody else writes like him.

It will leave no impression...if you're a corpse! 27 April 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
True, if you're looking for Isaac Asimov, this won't be your bag. But if you're openminded... Aylett is a raucous, un-pigeonholeable wildman whose work is amazingly funny. An in-your-face series of rants and bizarre fantasies. I don't see how anyone can read "If Armstrong Was Interesting" without laughing out loud: I read a passage to some friends on the street and we could barely walk we laughed so hard.

A pioneer of slipstream fiction 17 May 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Aylett encounters the same obstacles a Burroughs or Ballard did: if you're pushing the envelope, you're bound to confound dullards.... I guarantee you've never read work like this: and if you don't prejudge it, you WILL find it hilarious. Evelyn Waugh for the 21st century. A souped-up Bruce Sterling. Yum. Worth a few bucks for the ride.
