Review
'The diet programme in Dump Your Toxic Waist! has really helped me, especially my health. A couple of months before I started the programme, my doctor told me my blood pressure was high. My breathing was very bad I could hardly walk for two minutes without stopping, feeling tired and dizzy. Now I can proudly say I am all geared up for a marathon! I lost 7kg (15lbs) and 4 inches from my waist. My blood pressure has gone down to normal. Although I ve finished the 28 days, this is now my new lifestyle.' --Florence T.

The toxic bulge
LETHAL EPIDEMICS SWEEP WESTERN WORLD
This sensational headline is no exaggeration. We are being engulfed by epidemics of obesity, diabetes and heart disease - all merciless killers.
Where does all this destruction come from? To track the origins of this metabolic plague, you may have to look no further than your waist. This is where it all begins for most of us. If your waist is even a little wider than it should be, forget `love handles'and `spare tyre': this
is toxic tissue. It's not harmless flab, but a mass of metabolically malignant adipose tissue.
We now know that abdominal fat produces a range of noxious
chemicals called adipokines that sabotage your metabolism. These chemical messengers act like spies carrying a false message. As a result, tissues become less sensitive to insulin - producing the condition known as `insulin resistance' - and you lose control of your blood sugar; the pancreas has to pump out more insulin in order to
get a response; insulin levels go up and a vicious cycle accelerates the accumulation of abdominal fat; blood pressure rises; the balance of blood fats and cholesterol is upset; blood clots form more easily and arteries clog up.
The metabolic syndrome (Chapter 18) used to be called `Syndrome X', which makes it sound like a mysterious alien plot to wipe us out (and if it is, the aliens are enjoying a measure of success). If aliens had
implanted a toxic mass in your belly, programmed to destroy you insidiously, wouldn't you be keen to get rid of it?
You may want to slim your waist so you can look good on the
beach, or because you're fed up with buttons flying off your waistband. Quite understandable. Those are good enough reasons. But it's so much more important than that. Surely you want to do it in a way that keeps the weight off, blocking the vicious cycle and reversing the
changes that lead to high blood pressure, diabetes, blood clots and heart disease.
That's what this book is all about.
