I found this book the most helpful book I have ever read. It is almost written about my family. I have used Paul's learning to cope mechanism with my verbally abusive sister and 2 brothers and have learned to stand back but with dignity. I have learned so much from this book I wish I had found it earlier. I have paid hundreds of pounds for a Councellor only to find all I need to know in Paul's book. Thank you so so much Paul. I cannot rate this book high enough. I read a page or 2 every day to keep my mind in tune so I do not forget to forgive myself and that if my family want nothing to do with me then that is JUST HOW IT IS.

4.0 out of 5 stars great advice 23 July 2014

I enjoyed reading this book. It was to the point, and very helpful given my seriously dysfunctional family. I'm fed up with the roles everyone seems to be playing. Unfortunately, my own situation isn't basic bickering based on some statement made 20 years was much bigger than that. Still, for the more minor niggles that pop up, this does help to soothe the mind...particularly chapter 2.

3.0 out of 5 stars Poorly written with very little editing 24 July 2014

I can't believe I bought a book written by a narcissist! This book began to sound like a self-aggrandisment article on what a wonderful peacekeeping person the author truly believes himself to be. As he goes on, he inserts veiled attempts to assuage his own guilty conscience without actually pointing a finger at himself. There is an inherent flaw in his entire premise of "being quiet means you are innocent!" This type of flawed rational is what helps abuse of all kinds stay hidden, serial killers evade the law and those abusing their own elderly parents to remain unreported. In my opinion, the quietest people are hiding the darkest secrets.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great advice for those stuck in total dysfunction. 8 Sep 2014

This is a great and short lesson into how to survive familial dysfunction and more importantly, steps to remember how to remove yourself from the death grips of dysfunction. We can't choose our family members but we can choose how we interact with them. It's important to remember that we are not obligated to accept their behavior just because they are related to us. We are also not obligated to sacrifice our happiness to change them.
I can't tell anyone how many times I've been told to stand up and do something to stop my family's chaotic behavior. I've never wanted to be the hero and I've spent 29 years trying to get my family members to see the light while greatly sacrificing my own peace and sanity. It lead me in and out of therapy and in and out of depression. I have no control over what my family does and the sooner I realize that I am not put here to act as the family saviour, the better off my life will be.

My one and only gripe about this book is that there are a ridiculous amount of typos and spelling errors on just about every page, other than that I highly recommend this book to anyone that is finding themselves caught in the throes of serious family dysfunction.

1.0 out of 5 stars Yikes 22 Nov 2014

The author had good intentions but outside of his limited personal experience with his sister, there wasn't much to be learned. Some of us deal with a family dynamic where the dysfunctional problems run deeper than squabbles & forgiveness is NOT going to solve our feelings of being manipulated, anger & disgust. When dealing with TRULY toxic people, whether they are family or not, keeping your distance & limiting contact with them is the only way to enjoy a modicum of peace. I also found myself annoyed by poor choices of words, dodgy grammar & a plethora of misspellings. Proofreading is a necessity, even for the self published!

Everyone who experienced toxic family relationships knows how hard is it to follow some of the mainstream popular advice (for example: completely cut off your family etc) and how annoying some "great advice" from other people can get, but this book is really down to earth and wise. No cheesy B.S. Some of the parts were quite similiar to what my psychoterapist used to tell me (effective, but I had to pay him $140 for 60 minutes), some reassured what I already figured out (reinforcement of my beliefs, good as well, I'll take it), while another were really new to me and very useful. I definitely made a good choice buying this book.
