Latest Doctor Who companion chronicle. These are talking books that feature an actor who has played a companion to the Doctor returning to the role to record an all new story. They run for two episodes of approx thirty minutes each and are complete on a single cd.
The actor does all the narration and the character voices save for that of one character which is voiced by a guest actor.
This one is a slight format breaker because the actor in question hasn't played a companion on tv. It's Maggie Stables who has played Evelyn Smythe alongside Colin Baker as the Doctor in a great many audios down the years.
This story is what they a pure historical, because it features no science fiction elements at all. There may be appear to be a key one in the plot but that's not resolved in the way you might expect.
The Doctor and Evelyn happen to arrive on a train crossing the wild west, where they meet a young lady headed for a town called Fortune. Where she plans to get revenge for her father's murder. Finding wanted posters on the train with the Doctor's likeness on them forces the time travellers to abandon it in a hurry and head for fortune, where mystery and danger and people with a few secrets await...
Many familiar elements from westerns can be found but they're all written very well and brought to life via excellent narration and good sound design and music so that doesn't seem cliched at all. The reading is great and Maggie Stables is a pleasure to listen to but the fact that there is no fantastical element to hook you here does mean it doesn't really grab as much as it could, and there times when it can fail to hold the attention....
