Product Description

FILE UNDER: Krautrock, Electronic, New-Wave. TOWERS is the second album from BALTIC FLEET and follows his 2008 self-titled debut which was an Album of the Year (No 29) for Rough Trade Shops who described it as A faultless piece of instrumental music that captures the spirit of Eno, NEU! all the way through to modern post-rock and chamber music BALTIC FLEET is the moniker of multi-instrumentalist and DIY producer Paul Fleming. The second record signifies a departure from the travelling and diarising of life on the road (whilst touring as keyboard player for Echo & The Bunnymen), and arrives home to the industrial backdrop of North West England. The album was written and recorded in a room overlooking the industrial landscape a stone s throw from Spike Island, the scene of another Northern band s finest hour. The cinematic aspect is still apparent on this second offering but is more direct. Analogue synthesizers intertwined with distant guitars roll over a backdrop of live and electronic drums. Two years in the making, the record captures varied emotions. Towers tells a story of life in between the silos of Liverpool and Manchester but with a foot in both, a cultural no-man s land, in the shadows of industry. Immense Rough Trade Shops // Something special indeed. Outstanding evocative, expansive and ambitious Crack New Bands // Exceptional motorik beats NME Buzz // A wonderfully well rounded and complete album Louder Than War

Towers', although hardly a new release (it first saw the light of day
last Summer), seems to have slipped through the cracks in Amazon's ether.
It more than deserves a few words. This is in fact former part-time
Bunnyman Paul Fleming's second album under the Baltic Fleet banner.
The eponymous 2008 album, a collaboration with two other Bunnies, Will
Sargeant and Pete Wilkinson, did not find a firm footing in the listening
world, so I find myself rather glad that Mr Fleming has seen fit to have
another crack of the whip, this time largely on his own steam. 'Towers'
is an instrumental project which wears its debts to our Teutonic cousins'
electro-explorations lightly. Truth-be-told the formula is a simple one.
Strike up a pumping mechano-industrial beat and lay on the synths ten to
the dozen; whistling, bubbling and grinding for all they're worth. Although
there's not a great deal of variation in the ten numbers on offer I found
myself warming to its guileless machinations after two or three encounters.

Of particular interest 'The Wilds' tickled my fancy by virtue of its robotic
rhythm and 'Telstar'-like (that's The Tornados 1962 hit for the uninitiated!)
wasp-in-a-bottle melodic decorations. 'Engage', too, has a certain anachronistic
charm re-calling some of New Order's finer eighties' moments, with its energetic
bass line, jangly guitar and foursquare rhythm. The thrashing beats, stuttering
arpeggios and winsome thematic content of 'Winds Of The 84 Winter', however,
delivers perhaps the album's finest moment. A nicely affecting little anthem.

If you haven't heard already it catch it while you can.

Recommended.

This is a good CD for anyone who likes the sound of synths of the 80s. If you have to sample just one track - the outstanding track "Headless Heroes of the Acropolis" is a good place to start. If you like the music of Xeno and Oaklander another synth band you will enjoy the sound of BALTIC FLEET's "Towers" CD. After listening to Towers i wanted to explore their self titled first album from 2008 which is just as good if not better. Better still buy both albums - Highly Recommended.

I like instrumentals but rarely find an album that keeps me entertained throughout, The Baltic Fleet certainly kept me entertained throughout

This album be jammin'.
this is a nice instrumental, experimental or fusion album.
If you're familiar with Mogwai or Dj Shadow then this won't be unfamiliar to you and will be welcomed by your ear drums.
