Book Description

1 April 2010 0754675610 978-0754675617
Over the past 15 years, geography has made very significant contributions to our understanding of disabled people's identities, lives and places in society and space. Bringing together the leading scholars in this field, "Towards Enabling Geographies" puts forward the 'second wave' of geographical studies concerned with disability and embodied differences. It shows how this area of study has broadened and challenged conventional boundaries of 'disability', breaking new ground by expanding the kinds of embodied differences considered, while continuing to grapple with important challenges such as policy relevance and the use of more inclusionary research approaches. Theoretically, the book demonstrates the value of a spatial conceptualisation of disability and disablement to a broader social science audience, while examining how this conceptualization can be further developed and refined.

I think what I liked most about this book was its diversity. A lot of disability books I find focus mainly on wheelchair users where as this book did that and more. Kruse provides interesting work on dwarfism and their socio-spatial experinces within society and Longhurst provides interesting work on fatness, both bringing the subject of body size into disability.

The book really helps to expand knowledges relating to geographies of disabilities. From socio-emotional issues to material aspects of disability, this book gives the reader a good understanding of the subject.

The book largly focuses on embodiment from ageing to disability and the home, showing an increased awareness of the importance of including embodiment within the subject.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in Geographies of Disability, particulary undergraduates, postgraduates and other researchers.
