'Toward the Within' has always been one of my favourite DCD albums, so I was delighted to finally get the chance to see this accompanying live footage. Nor is it merely an accompaniment: the track listing is a little different (no 'Persian Love Song', but instead the interesting 'Gloridean', a longer, multiple-voices version of a _Mirror Pool_ track), and interview snippets with Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry are interspersed among the performances. There are also four promos, ranging from pretty-but-slightly-dull, to deeply weird ('Frontier' resembles the cursed video of the original _Ring_). The picture quality is reasonable - although not, certainly, up to normal DVD standards - and the sound is fine (indeed, IMHO the mix on 'Song of the Sibyl' is rather better than the CD version).
While this DVD isn't perfect, then, I'm amazed at the criticisms from some of the other reviewers here. To my mind this is a great, inexpensive package for DCD fans. Seeing Gerrard, Perry and their fellow musicians onstage gives a fascinating insight into the way they all play off each other; there's an infectious energy to 'Desert Song', 'Cantara' and 'Oman', and the visible emotion Gerrard invests in her vocals on 'Sanvean' or 'Tristan' adds another layer to already excellent renditions. With a little more attention paid to the quality of the visuals and perhaps a few more extras, this could have been excellent value for money; as it is, it's still well worth the purchase.
