Book Description

The Finnish-Swedish writer and artist Tove Jansson achieved worldwide fame as the creator of the Moomin stories, written between 1945 and 1970 and still in print in more than twenty languages. However, the Moomins were only a part of her prodigious output. Already admired as a painter, cartoonist and illustrator, she would go on to write a series of classic novels and short stories. She remains Scandinavia’s best loved author. In this meticulously researched biography, Boel Westin draws together the many threads of Tove Jansson’s artistic and writing life: from her emergence as a talented artist and illustrator, through her extraordinary creation of the Moomins, and the later years of writing novels such as The Summer Book. She charts, too, the artist’s personal story: growing up in Helsinki and studying in Stockholm and Paris; her ambivalence about marriage, and joyful relationships with women; and her summers on a solitary island with her long-term partner, Tuulikki Pietilä. Based on numerous conversations with Tove and her circle, and unprecedented access to her journals, letters and personal archives, Tove Jansson: Life, Art, Words offers a rare and privileged insight into the world of a writer whom Philip Pullman described, simply, as ‘a genius’.

Some interesting parts but lots of repetition, a bit tedious and far too long!

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything you wanted to know about Tove Jansson! 15 April 2014
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This is a large, well produced book telling the life story of Tove Jansson and will appeal to not only those who know her through the Moomins series of books but also newcomers and admirers of her adult stories and work as an artist. There a dozens of photos interspersed within the 500+ pages of text together with three sections of colour plates and nice end papers. "Luscious" would be a term that comes to mind to describe the production. To my mind the best book on Tove yet produced. Thoroughly recommended!

3.0 out of 5 stars Lost in words 3 Oct. 2014
By T. Bently VINE VOICE
Format:Hardcover
Sadly this huge book is let down by the poor quality of translation. Tove's story fails to float off the page despite all the work the biographer has put in. Sculptor's Daughter remains the most readable guide to her life. On the up side - it looks beautiful. I loved the colour plates of Jansson's early paintings and the maps and cartoons she made during her visits as an art student to Paris.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Thorough look into an interesting artist 30 Mar. 2014
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This book once and for all proves that Tove Jansson was not just the Moomin mamma - no, her life was full of happiness, trauma, romance and hard work that made her into the legend she was, and whose writing still lives on. Richly illustrated, beautifully translated and non-apologetic - a few secrets have been left to be shared, with the author's access to private correspondence and files. Even the more scandalous events of her life are covered with suitably academic distance.

Some passages are rather technical, however, with the author, a professor of literature, dwelling into the psychology of each of Jansson's books, but those are also quite revealing indeed, and should not scare anyone from picking this thick tome. A great gift for any mature Moomin fan, and for anyone who is curious to learn more about this mysterious figure.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite, apart from the obvious - Moomintroll 16 Oct. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Quick and simple delivery, Thank you!

I cant wait to read more about this intruiging author. My favorite, apart from the obvious - Moomintroll, is the Summer Book. A simple, yet powerful book of a girl and her Grandma on a tiny island. Well worth a read. I hope this will be too!

5.0 out of 5 stars Moomins Explained! 19 Mar. 2014
By twee
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
A fascinating addition to her various adult short stories as well as shedding light on many of the aspects of the moomins.
Somewhat stilted in style compared with the best biographies written by native English speakers {romantics?}, but to be recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Poor Translation , Little Sense of Tove 16 May 2014
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
The translation is patchy, sketchy at times. It's clear the biographer admires and wishes to champion Tove but lucidity is lost in translation.
