5.0 out of 5 stars A TRIUMPH OF THE HUMAN SPIRIT 4 Nov 2009
This is a true story,a son's tribute to his father, whose life spanned the great events of the 20th Century. Caught in Poland at the outbreak of World War II, 'Tovarisch' fled from the Nazis only to be arrested by the NKVD (forerunner of the KGB), and despatched to the gulag. He made a daring escape from the camp in the far north, through Moscow and on to Tashkent, but the NKVD caught up with him and he was beaten and tortured in an attempt to turn him into a spy. Defiant throughout, he survives to practice medicine in the Ukraine. At war's end he returns to the town of his childhood to find all his relations have perished either at the hands of the Nazis, or of Ukrainian fascists who murdered many who knew too much about their co-operation with the occupying forces. Except for one brother who survived and escaped to Israel. 'Tovarisch' survived and emigrated first to Venezuela, then the UK. The son returns with his father to seek the NKVD file in the early years of the downfall of the Soviet Union in the early nineties..... many tantalizing questions remain unanswered.....

This documentary is an inspirational story of one man's strength during the holocaust and gulag. Filled with wonderful archive and family video footage alongside one man's story of his father through the eyes of a camera - encountering personal and political moments.
