Book Description

The celebrated first novel by one of the rising stars of British literature

Product Description

'Thorne's clear, deep, slightly sardonic style is a real find and eschews youthful show-offery to create a story with many levels, and characters whose frayed edges cast them in sharp relief against a background of a decaying tourist town. Tourist, the story of an attempt to shrug off all-town boredom by creating a futuristic nightclub, is an understated triumph' The Big Issue 'In clear and intelligent prose, Thorne portrays the sad sickliness of those who try to make a lifestyle out of a place that should only be visited. The subculture of this seaside town will hang around like the aroma of old chips' Gill Hornby, Times

I've been a fan of Matt Thorne's books for a couple of years now and have read them all. Athough I enjoyed this novel, which is written in Matt's usual, amazingly atmospheric style, the plot doesn't really get anywhere. If you haven't read a Matt Thorne book before, start somewhere else. If you have enjoyed the others, read this if you need a Matt Thorne fix.

Weston Super Mare has everything a British seaside town should have: a bleak, transient feel; kitsch arcades and oddly impotent nightclubs. Sarah is in Weston in order to escape from life - and doing a pretty good job of it, too. This first novel is emotional and complex, detailing Sarah's affairs and general routine. She lives in a B&B, sleeps with married men and doesn't commit to anything. When it looks like she might have found something more solid... Well, read the book and find out. Matt Thorne is the prince of contemporary English fiction. Sexy, original and super-cool, he's going all the way.

A gripping read from first time novelist, Matt Thorne based around a British seaside town. The characters come alive as this novel evolves. It is interesting that the main female character is totally believable in her thoughts and actions - particularly when written by a male. I look forward to Matt Thorne's next novel ...
