Although Iceland has few roads, those deciding to tour need good quality guidance as road conditions are poor in much of Iceland. This map shows all roads in Iceland except those in towns and sets them against a relief map which gives some clue about the terrain. Iceland is so varied that the map meets another purpose - that of understand Iceland's varied geography. In fact, on the reverse of the map are pictures and brief descriptions of landmarks across Iceland, but are no substitute for a good guide book. The map also has a useful distance chart on the back which includes most, if not all, towns in the country.
If you are staying aroung Recjavik, this map is not essential, but if you are motoring further afield, make sure you get it before you set out - there are few roadside shops or petrol stations.

Route 1 is the ring road which literally runs in a ring around the island. It is well maintained and the surface in mostly tarmac. It is the main road and the lifeline of the country. However, once you leave the safety of Route 1 you really need a detailed and informative map, especially if you intend to navigate F-Roads with glacial rivers and off road adventure or plan to drive when the weather is volatile and unpredictable.
This map was a necessity for me, driving in winter when some roads were closed, impassable, dangerous...
I would not recommend driving in Iceland without this map.

This map did its job for us. We planned our trip and had a good idea about the routes we would take. It isn't quite detailed enough for my liking. You can get larger scale maps of specific area when you get to Iceland, but they're in specialist shops and quite expensive.

It was adequate for planning the trip but not sufficiently detailed once in Iceland. We had to buy additional maps once there.
