Book Description

22 Jan 2002 Battleground Europe
The guide describes the ground and operations covered by the British, French and US Expeditionary Forces deployed from France to the area North of Venice between November 1917 and Spring 1919. These Forces supported the Italians after their disastrous defeat at Caporetto and helped stem the Austrian and German onslaught. This is the first guide to the Allied contribution and the Piave Defence line. The guide also covers the rear areas - supply and repair services, training and recreation. It also describes the movement to Italy and subsequent service and care of the 16,000 British and 20,000 French horses and mules. The US contribution has never been adequately described before.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wets your appetite to do the tour 16 April 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Having skied the Sella Ronda a few times we decided to do the great war circuit for an change. To increase the interested I wanted background information. It proved surprisingly difficult to find information about the fighting in the dolomites. I found this book along with "The White War: Life and Death on the Italian Front, 1915-1919" ,and "Death on the Italian Front, 1915-1919 and "Battles in the Alps: A History of the Italian Front of the First World War". The latter book order was cancelled by the supplier, so I can't comment on it but I see it is now available for Kindle. I rated this book highly as there is little alternative. The book is aimed at those intending to do a summer road tour of the WW1 sites. The tour is a very attractive proposition giving extra reason to spend time in one of the most beautiful places on earth along with exciting roads and great food.
This only give a few pieces of the jigsaw & you need to do a lot of other reading to get a fuller picture of the reasons for this futile part of WW1. You also need to arm your self with good maps. It did not help much for our tour on skis but will put the summer tour on my bucket list.

3.0 out of 5 stars Only for those really interested 1 Sep 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book is really only for those who are researching the Italian Front of the Great War or someone visiting the area with an intention of going to a specific battlefield. Good on several small actions and a general history of Allied involvement - BUT, only for the intiated.
