Don't expect anything from OUT OF TIME or AUTOMATIC FOR THE PEOPLE (actually Belong and Through The Barricades feature briefly but aren't on the track listing).

This is REM just before they went huge, taken from the world tour promoting the GREEN album, their first since joining a major label.

It captures them at their very best, playing the tight guitar-based alternative rock that typifies their early work.

After this album they didn't tour again until the Monster LP and by that time their muse had left them and if REM still exist in 2003 they are no longer relevant, at least not to these ears, sadly.

It is easy to see comparisons between Michael Stipe and Morrissey during this period - they certainly wore similar clothing anyway!

Nothing much else to say, this is just a no-nonsense concert video from one of the best bands of the last 20 years, playing at their peak.

If you like their music before OUT OF TIME then buy it.
If you don't, go see a psychiatrist or an ear surgeon!

The only negative of this DVD is that it is only in PCM stereo format - there isn't any Dolby 2.0 or 5.1 or DTS audio track.

Maybe it will get remastered and re-released at a later date,
it sounds great anyway so it's probably not necessary.

On the plus side you can put on English subtitles to find out what Stipe is actually singing - very useful for "It's The End Of The World As We Know It"!

One nice touch is the band playing "After Hours" by the Velvet Underground at the very end (again unlisted on the DVD).

REM at their best! 17 Jan 2001
Format:DVD
This live movie, filmed at a few different locations, came out just before "Out of Time" (in fact at one point in the show they run though a rough "Belong"). Playing at large university type halls, the band is at the peak, and sadly the end of their college popularity. A few months after this film was shot, "Out of Time" made the band mainsteam. If you like REM prior to the Shiny Happy People days, you will love this film. It's all concert footage with very little of that blury camera crap that REM did in previous years. I saw the band a year before this came out, and this is truly REM at their best.

A must for REM fans 10 Jan 2012
Format:DVD
This film is an evocative snapshot of REM at that time (1989) before they went mainstream and became global icons, as they perform towards the end of their long Green world tour (filmed mainly in Georgia I think). It's an excellent show and a must to own if you love REM at all. The band play both fast and furious; sweet and tender; they are energetic and original - and although its filmed in black and white (as a number of their early films were) this seems to work because the aura of the time really comes across. Best moments to me are I Believe (incredible, one of best versions around) and Perfect Circle with which they wind up the show. I think their songs changed after the Green album, the songs on this film are a good example of their earlier (but not earliest) days on the IRS label. This film sums up pre-global REM at their very top, and Stipe's fantastic long plait is a work of art!! If you are a new fan then I'm sure you will love this, and it will inspire you to get to know their early work, which I think was the best.
