Product Description

Review

'The Tour is back, so it's the perfect time to revisit an event full of sabotage, rivalry, politics, doping, death and even multiple crash-inducing dogs in glossy full-colour worthy of that hallowed yellow jersey' Shortlist magazine.

'Handsomely illustrated ... the book is an eccentric social history of modern France via its quintessential sporting spectacle' The Lady.

From the Inside Flap

The Tour de France Official 100th Race Anniversary Edition is the essential guide to the world's biggest annual sporting event. Compiled by a quartet of France's most renowned cycling historians, it features authoritative commentary on each of the Tour's 100 editions, starting with its inaugural race back in 1903. Showcased here are the Tour's biggest names, greatest battles and legendary figures, such as 1903 winner Maurice Garin, five-time champions Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinsault and Miguel Indurain, as well as Britain's first Tour champion, Sir Bradley Wiggins. This book also reflects on the tragedies and scandals of professional cycling's most prized event, including the spectacular rise and very public fall of Lance Armstrong. The insightful narrative is complemented throughout by over 250 stunning photographs - many of which are previously unpublished, drawn from renowned Tour historian Serge Laget's personal collection of races, riders, memorabilia and ephemera. This special volume also features comprehensive statistics and information on every race, including a detailed route map, the Tour's stage-winners, the top 10 finishers and the jersey champions. A stunning celebration of cycling's most prestigious, picturesque and popular event, the Tour de France Official 100th Race Anniversary Edition is the essential guide to the unique event that is the Tour de France.

Format: Hardcover
The book is laid out with a brief introduction on the birth of the tour followed by a brief history with top 10 standings of every year that it has been going as well as a preview to the 2013 tour. At the back is the tour classifications with all the winners of the tour, the points race, King of the mountains and the Young Rider race. There are also tour records like smallest gap between winners. There are also a quick reference Roll of Honour which giveving the top 3's with the distance and average Speed.
It's a very good quick reference book with all the up to date standings.

It's big, it's not your standard hardback so you can't read it in the bath. But read it everywhere else, it's stunningly good even if you have only a mild interest in cycling as a sport. It'll captivate you. For the cycling geeks, it's seriously good in text, pics, format, presentation, etc etc. I'll be pulling this off the shelf in long winter nights in my old age to immerse in it.

I bought this as part of an anniversay present for my husband, a mad cyclist. He has many books on cycling including the Tour de France, however, this is a great Anniversary book (the tour's 100th, not just ours) with great pictures following the history of the tour from the beginning todate. A nice book for the collection, which he seems very happy with.
