Product Description

The world's greatest bike race as seen from the air.

"How beautiful France is, viewed from the air! France with its countryside and its cities. France with its magnificent monuments and its hidden treasures, its churches, and its old villages. The Tour de France was created in 1903 and popularised through the radio, but television without doubt was what gave it real prominence. Today, the spectacular scenery of the event is filmed using the latest camera technology, capturing the beauty of the surroundings in which the world s greatest bike race is set.

In 1948 the first live outside broadcast took place, the arrival at the Parque des Princes filmed using simple fixed camera positions. Then cars were introduced, swiftly followed by mobile cameras and helicopters, which capture the wonderful pictures which we admire every July. Finally, the introduction of high definition in 2007 allowed superb quality pictures to be beamed around the world.

The combination of the Tour de France and stunning images of the French countryside is a real love story and this incredible film presents the Tour as seen from the air, which is truly breathtaking. Archive pictures going back to the very first Tour de France reveal the most exciting and dramatic events which have taken place over the years in the race itself, all set against a magnificent backdrop.

Revisit the stunning scenery that France is famous for; from the plains of Picardy to Burgundy, the wine districts around Bordeaux, the Mediterranean coast, the Cathar route, the Pyrenees, Alsace, Brittany, the Alps and of course Paris, this incredible film captures the vue du ciel.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great images - dreadful soundtrack! 22 July 2013

Fantastic overhead camera work completely ruined by an over obtrusive music track that overpowers the commentary Phil Leggett reads from a script, Paul Sherwin would have been better!

3.0 out of 5 stars Great images, shame about the commentary 22 April 2014

I've always enjoyed the helicopter images of the French countryside when watching Le Tour - and often been irritated by Phil;Liggett's inane commentary. With this you get both: an exquisite perspective on the French landscape with Phil; at his rambling worst. So turn the video sound offput on your favourite instrumental CD and enjoy the images.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magnificent 2 Nov 2013

You don't have to be nuts about cycling to enjoy this, it's not about the bike. Its about the wonderful variety of scenery, landscape and buildings that you can see from your armchair. It's longer than I thought it would be too, much better than most travel documentaries. Highly recommended by this cycling and aerial photography afficionado.
