Bearing little/no resemblance to the classic original, Kraftwerk apparently rush-released this to coincide with the centenary of this year's cycle race, which is particularly amazing in view of the fact, that apart from Expo 2000, this is the first new material from Kraftwerk since the late eighties, Kraftwerk aren't exactly renowned for rushing anything!
What's great about this CD single is:- the new lyrics, that in true Kraftwerk style, focus on the transmission of race information rather than the drama of the race itself; the throbbing / pulsating bass line; the intricate vocoder work (Madonna take note!), and the fact that there are no real gaps between the tracks, making it sound like a suite of music, or soundtrack.
What's noticeably lacking is one of those, hairs-on-the-back-of-the-neck electronic musical moments that up until now Kraftwerk have been the masters of.
It does bode well for the album, due out on 21.07.03, but, bearing in mind that at the time of writing this (09.07.03) EMI supposedly hadn't received any test pressings ... Don't hold your breath folks!
The tracks are still noticeably Kraftwerk-esque, Ralf & Florian seem to have dusted off a few of the sounds from 'Computerworld' and 'The Mix' although the music sounds somehow softer (with the exception of the Vocoder) than earlier tracks.
Intersting to read the remarks about the forthcoming album in the previous review - another 'Technopop'?
Get this - even if it's for the rarity value of 50+ year old Germans creating Techno and 'singing' in French through a vocoder.
