Product Description
Live music is a huge industry and playing live is an integral part of the success for any musician, band or artist. "The Tour Book" provides practical advice, hints and tips on every aspect of putting on a live show rehearsing, equipment, travel, accommodation, booking and promoting shows, sound checking, contracts, taxation, working abroad and marketing. Featuring interviews with the industry's key figures and contemporary artists and musicians, "The Tour Book" is the only book to contain the distilled advice of these artist managers, booking agents, talent buyers and very successful artists and bands.

From the Publisher
The music industry is extraordinarily fickle and you will
often only get one chance to make that lasting impression. By being
unprepared and unprofessional you run the risk of making mistakes. Those
mistakes could lead to the end of your career, before you even get
started!

If you are serious about working or performing in the live industry you are
going to need some help to avoid those mistakes. The help you need is
inside `The Tour Book'!

In this book you will learn:

* How the industry works - what artist managers, promoters and booking
agents actually do and how they work together to arrange shows and tours
* How to understand show contracts and how to produce your own
contracts, contract riders and technical specifications enabling you to get
more money for your shows!
* How to prepare yourself for playing live; rehearsing, checking and
understanding your equipment, writing a `killer' set list and knowing what
to do when all goes wrong on stage.
* What the `big' agents and promoters are looking for and how to get
those huge shows.
* Industry terms and conventions - be able to converse with music
business people and crew alike.
* How to gain and keep work in the industry as a booking agent,
promoter, technician or service provider

Featuring interviews with key industry figures and successful bands, the
book is stuffed with insider hints and tips to help you get YOUR show on
the road!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for beginners and seasoned pros alike, 4 Feb 2008
By Dune Music (London, UK) - See all my reviews
As live music producers, we can see that The Tour Book will be very useful for musicians starting their careers as well as those who are already established but want to know more about the live music industry.

Andy clearly knows his stuff. He's been touring for nearly 20 years and so really can speak from a position of 'been there, seen it, done it, got the postcard, the t-shirt, etc'. He also writes well, with subjects broken down into easy-to-read, easy-to-understand sections with plenty of good examples.

This book is a must, not only for touring, but for anyone performing live music.

3.0 out of 5 stars good book but not the best, 22 Jun 2008

(REAL NAME)
This book 'how to get your music on the road how to get your show on the road' has only the basic for starting you doing your own live show but it lacks real preparation for beginners. It assumes that you are already a star and touring or have the skills!
However, I prefer the book 'An essential guide for serious singers and musicians' The latter contains provable technique that works! It covers the legal aspect of the music business, how to get yourself out off shark like contracts and getting yourself on radio.
I wish I had bought this book first 'an essential guide for serious singers and musicians' before touring as i would have known how gritty and dark the world of the music industry is.
An essential guide for serious singers and musicians tells it as it is with no gloss and sheen talk it gets his hands dirty where other book fails and it will leave you empowered and ready for success.
I already have a record company interested in me and all because I have followed the right techniques this great book says. You also am told how to protect your work, and organisation that will help you do it. It really is the musicians bible.
If you want to also know how the record industry rips you off then this book is a must I couldn't recommend it enough. Forget the first book and go for the latter you won't regret it. You can get this also through amazon

5.0 out of 5 stars Written by someone who actually works in the industry!, 19 Nov 2007
A brilliant and detailed guide for anyone learning about the industry, wanting to put on bigger and better shows or work behind-the-scenes. He obviously has a wealth of experience and is passing on the knowledge here.

This book contains extensive information about how modern concerts are booked, the main people involved, contracts, contract riders and some really useful technical tips.

There are some invaluable screen shots of example contracts and contract riders, tour budgets and technical documents, stuff like this is hard to get when you first go on the road. He actually explains the way it all works, how ticket prices are worked out for a show and how much money the artist should be paid and loads of other little gems. There are sections on marketing, health and safety as well as a couple of tour diaries that really spell out what happens at a modern show! Could save you many pounds/dollars/yens....

I mostly liked quotes and information from the people who work for bands like All-American Rejects, My Chemical Romance and the Artic Monkeys which for me makes it all real.
