Fantastic 1 Aug 2008
By Steve
Format:Paperback
This is far more than a battlefield self guided tour book - anyone looking for a clear and detailed account of the deployment of the 1st Airborne Division at Arnhem will enjoy it, whether they are visiting Arnhem or not. Well written, this book presents the complex operation in a logical fashion making the whole battle, how it went wrong and why it was lost much easier to understand. The battle itself is covered in 4 sections detailing each units exploits and is regularly interspersed with photos and veterans personal accounts (the author is a veteran also) to make the book incredibly readable and more intimate than you would expect from a tour book.
Anyone who would like a battlefield example of how a division fights together and how separate units are deployed in a set piece battle - from Division HQ through brigades, battalions, companies and platoons - would also benefit from reading this. An altogether excellent book.
(Oh yes, it has been wrongly titled by Amazon, but the image you see is the book you get).

A great book about the Market Garden battlefields around Arnhem, wich goes into detail and location day by day of the battle.

I bought this book because i also own 'A tour of the Bulge battlefields' wich goes into detail about the 'Battle of the Bulge'.

I can recommend this book if you want to go on location and do you own investigation of the battlefields.

I BOUGHT THIS BOOK FOR MY UNCLE WHO HAD JUST RETURNED FROM A BATTLEFIELD TOUR OF ARNHEN. HE SAID IT REALLY WAS AN EXCELLENT ACCOUNT OF THE BATTLE BY ONE WHO WAS ON THE SPOT. THE AUTHOR WAS THE SPECIAL ADVISER TO THE FILM COMPANY THAT MADE THE FILM 'A BRIDGE TOO FAR'.
