Two of the greatest !,
By
This review is from: Tough Guys [DVD] [1987] (DVD)
This movie is not bad at all. Its good entertainment and after all thats what a movie is all about. But essentially, here we have two of the finest actors of the last century. Just enjoy their work. Burt and Kirk have nothing to prove. Both have appeared in dozens of movies. Here they are just having fun and taking the chance to earn some cash - even if they are hardly are on their uppers! The plot of this film is well known and explained elsewhere. That does not matter. Briefly, a couple of old cons are released from jail after a 30 year stretch and expect to rejoin their old life as they left it. There are some set pieces that are a treat to watch; the encounter with the street gang, adjusting to life in a care home and dropping in to a gay bar for a beer are just three of many. I should also mention the uni-sex gym. for further amusement. Just sit back and enjoy watching these two tough guys at work, their acting is just effortless. All you have to do is enjoy the entertainment!

Lancaster and Douglas together again ..... for the last time!,
By
This review is from: Tough Guys [DVD] [1987] (DVD)
After 30 years in prison for robbing a train in the 1950s, two gangsters (Burt Lancaster, Kirk Douglas) now find themselves elderly men in the new world of the 1980s where they don't fit in. Lancaster feels confined by the rules and over regulation of the retirement home he's been sent to and Douglas tries to recapture his youth by going out with a hot, young gym instructor (Darlanne Fluegel) to discos and rock clubs but her sexual energy drains him. Directed by Jeff Kanew (REVENGE OF THE NERDS), the film attempts to find humor in the cliched and stereotypical treatment of senior citizens, almost to the point of offensiveness. Still, it's wonderful to see Lancaster and Douglas in their last spurt of bravura, playing off their old screen personas, as both would shortly be severely affected by strokes in the following years. The highlight of the film is a hilarious Eli Wallach as an incompetent near sighted hit man. The movie has one of those tiresome 80s synthesizer/drum machine score scores but there is a lovely ballad over the main credits by Burt Bacharach and sung by Kenny Rogers. With Alexis Smith, Charles Durning, Dana Carvey and Billy Barty.
The British DVD (it's a title not available in the U.S.) is in the proper wide screen 2.35 ratio.

This review is from: Tough Guys [DVD] [1987] (DVD)
I remember this film from childhood, it is simple comedy and it works. This film is enjoyable from start to finish. I deffinately recommend it. In fact my sisters and I are looking for more movies of this elk to have a movie night. Good, funny and not full of itself, this film is a welcome break from modern EMO films
