This is a game which has really split opinions as you can see from other reviews, but I think its one which is a worth a try - though its perhaps better to rent before you buy.
I have never played any of the Turok series before but my idea of this being a shoot 'em up with Dinosaurs was fairly accurate. The graphics are an issue in some cases, others have cited the 2D grass and PS2-like environments as a particular gripe, and rightly so, but the dinosaurs - despite occasionally odd movements - are very nicely textured and the water effects are often quite nice when they appear, despite the fact that the graphics are not outstanding the jungles often seem quite vibrant and immersive.
As for the gameplay I cannot claim to have finished the game yet but from what I have played the weaponry on offer ranges from the sub-machine gun to the infamous bow - something I anticipated would be rather stupid but actually turns out to be a real gem - similarly all weapons have a secondary fire function which is often quite handy - particularly that of the mine gun to effectively lay a minefield in front of marauding enemies and the shotgun's flare which can be used to lure dinosaurs to attack each other or the enemy.
However other gripes include the sheer frustrating nature of dinosaur attacks, creatures like the raptors (of which various kinds appear in the game) and others can just seemingly appear in endless number from hollows in the ground, which makes for desperate shooting and then repeated blows as you try to reload, which sometimes makes for tense action and sometimes is just plain frustrating.
So all in all, I think Turok is quite an enjoyable game, a shooter with a difference (namely dinosaurs), though not always up to standards for a next-gen the graphics are passable and sometimes impressive, but its not the best PS3 game I own due to its repetitiveness and, sometimes, its simpleness - Turok may be big, but it isn't particularly clever.
