4.0 out of 5 stars A Mixed Bag 11 Feb. 2008
Platform for Display:PlayStation 3
Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
This is a game which has really split opinions as you can see from other reviews, but I think its one which is a worth a try - though its perhaps better to rent before you buy.

I have never played any of the Turok series before but my idea of this being a shoot 'em up with Dinosaurs was fairly accurate. The graphics are an issue in some cases, others have cited the 2D grass and PS2-like environments as a particular gripe, and rightly so, but the dinosaurs - despite occasionally odd movements - are very nicely textured and the water effects are often quite nice when they appear, despite the fact that the graphics are not outstanding the jungles often seem quite vibrant and immersive.

As for the gameplay I cannot claim to have finished the game yet but from what I have played the weaponry on offer ranges from the sub-machine gun to the infamous bow - something I anticipated would be rather stupid but actually turns out to be a real gem - similarly all weapons have a secondary fire function which is often quite handy - particularly that of the mine gun to effectively lay a minefield in front of marauding enemies and the shotgun's flare which can be used to lure dinosaurs to attack each other or the enemy.

However other gripes include the sheer frustrating nature of dinosaur attacks, creatures like the raptors (of which various kinds appear in the game) and others can just seemingly appear in endless number from hollows in the ground, which makes for desperate shooting and then repeated blows as you try to reload, which sometimes makes for tense action and sometimes is just plain frustrating.

So all in all, I think Turok is quite an enjoyable game, a shooter with a difference (namely dinosaurs), though not always up to standards for a next-gen the graphics are passable and sometimes impressive, but its not the best PS3 game I own due to its repetitiveness and, sometimes, its simpleness - Turok may be big, but it isn't particularly clever.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings over a good idea 1 May 2010
Platform for Display:PlayStation 3
Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
I remember playing a Turok game years ago on the PS2 and thought I I would finally get around to playing the PS3 version. There are good and bad points about the game as other people have noted but I want my two cents worth :)
The graphics are not as good as they should be for the PS, but then this game did come out some time ago and couldn't make full use of the engine. The charaters have a slightly fuzzy outline in the cut scenes, the lip syncs could have been a bit better also. That said however, the dinosaurs are quite well done, they look alive and at times there will be a cut scene where you are attacked by one and you have to press the R buttons to kill him before he kills you. The grass as mentioned by others does look 2D which is a shame as it doesn't feel like you are going through a jungle at times, one of my main dislikes is that the game is far too dark and you cannot seem to adjust the settings in the game. I had to turn the brightness up on my TV so that I could see where I wanted to go as I fell down a crevice and then couldn't see anything to try and get out by. The enemies have a decent AI and will flank you and hide behind corners so they can leap out on you, at some points they will attack you with other objects which I wont state as it is a spoiler.
The controls are very easy to use and you get used to them off the bat without having to worry about a tutorial, I haven't completed half the game yet so I cannot give an idea of all the weapons, however, the SMG is a good weapon as you can fit a silencer, the knife is good for stealth kills and some of the weapons have a secondary fire mode. The handgun packs a punch in secondary but eats ammo, the shotgun is good also.

3.0 out of 5 stars Average, nothing more, but nothing less 25 Jan. 2010
Platform for Display:PlayStation 3
Fun: 3.0 out of 5 stars
I bought this game for a real low prize so I didn't expect much. And this was exactly what I got- not much. But none the less its quite fun shooting dinosaurs for a while. Graphics are not the best, but acceptable. Game mechanics are ok, the AI isn't quite as dumb as you can expect from other shooters, but there are some really unfair parts in the game. And I mean unfair- not difficult. The atmosphere is really convincing. And there are dinosaurs!! Do I have to say any more?

So i'd say buy it if you are a fan of the series. Think twice if you want a really good Shooter. As for me, I am a fan of the previous Games and I found a good deal.

4.0 out of 5 stars Turok for The PS3 13 Oct. 2008
By Jay
Platform for Display:PlayStation 3
Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
Story: Turok has you assume the role of Joseph Turok an ex member of the black ops elite group known as the Wolfpack, Turok awakens in a Cyro tube (seen in Aliens) where he has joined a new elite group known as Whiskey Co, His mission is to help Whiskey Co locate and capture his old mentor Kane (leader of the Wolfpack) however not everyone on whiskey co is happy about having Turok on bored and know more about him than he thinks. Upon approaching a planet where Kane is beleived to be held up their ship is shot down and the squad is sepearated on a planet that isnt from this world, and a conspiricy way beyond their imagination, their mission is no longer just capture Kane its SURVIVAL...

Graphics: Turoks graphics are very impressive even if you dont have a HDTV you will still be amazed by the detail of the game, especially the dinosaurs they look, act and move exactly the way you would expect them to, some textures on rocks can look a little bit blurry at times but thats not really a big issue when you consider how well detailed everything else in the environment is. Facial expressions and lip sync are really good in this game and the expressions really show the emotion the character is feeling. The Jungle environments look spot on as well especially at nightfall when all you have is the moonlight to guide you and anything can be hunting you. The gore effects in this game are also pretty good looking and the physics engine is what you would expect from an Unreal Engine game.

Gamplay: The game plays like any other FPS and has smooth controls they might take some getting use to at first though but once you learn the basics your set.
