Biography

Roni Size started on the path of musical production when he was thrown out of school at age 16, but music had always been a part of his life. Roni was born and grew up at 'the top of the hill' a.k.a. St Andrew's, Bristol. From the bottom of this hill came the sounds of the 70's blues parties and sound-systems - the beat infected Roni's bones. So, after being expelled he ... 5.0 out of 5 stars King (Roni) Size 3 Dec 2002
By Mr. Abbas Rana VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
...In a sentence, Touching Down is vibrant, loud and gripping. It's a scary and thriling helter-skelter ride through the world of breakbeat, jungle or whatever you want to call it. There are no tacky MC's 'rocking the mic', no predictable female choruses... instead it's just pure headhitting beats and demonic basslines.
There are no proper tracks, it's an hour of breathtakingly impressive hooks, mangled and spliced together. With a tongue'n'cheek tracklisting that includes, 'Scrambled Eggs', 'Swings and Roundabouts' and 'Reel Dark One', Roni Size has ensured that there is no pretence on this record - as was the case with Goldie's Saturnz Return - and it is all about the pure arms-flailing and body rocking beats.
Roni Size basically lets go on this record and makes sure that drum n' bass sounds like what it is supposed to - catchy yet dark, mindless yet clever. It's reminiscent to the way the Chemicals unleashed their own version of big beats on 'Dig Your Own Hole'. Easily one of the best albums of the year. Get a copy and remind yourself of what music is supposed to sound like and make you feel.

Roni Size goes it alone on this album, shedding his Reprazent Crew, and this is certainly an album with the feeling of being made by a solo artist.
It is obvious to see that Mr Size has put hours worth of production and mixing into this album, as one high quality D'N'B tune flows into the next, but there are no lyrics. At all. MC Dynamite's welcome presence is no longer apparent. Now although the Jungle scene isn't neccessarily based around it's vocals, joints like Who Told U? really draw the listener into feeling part of the music as they can sing-a-long, and this album kind of alienates it's listeners because of that.
The highlight of the album has to be track four, Scrambled Eggs, not only because of it's well constructed and painfully mulled-over name, but also because it is a representation of Roni Size at his menacing bouncy best.
This is still amazingly-produced music, with novel and inventive techniques deployed, so I recommend it to any Drum'N'Bass fans. Just don't expect anything commercial (I suppose Roni deserves a pat on the back for not bowing to financial pressures). Or anything that you can sing along with into a hairbrush in front of a mirror.

3.0 out of 5 stars An under-achievement 19 Nov 2002
Format:Audio CD
Roni Size has clearly proved himself as an outstanding and versatile d'n'b producer, and judging by the soundness of his Reprazent releases, I felt a loyalty to buying this his first solo album. However, although the production quality is of the high standard you would expect from the man throughout the LP, the material is not hugely original. The mix is very dancefloor-orientated and as such does not give Roni the chance to explore other areas of production which I am sure he is capable.
Furthermore, the likes of BC and Dillinja produce harder, heavy bass rollers (more) ideal for the club scene, so its hard to think of when this album really shines.
I would recommend Roni Size's 'Through The Eyes' Full Cycle compilation as a better album though in a similar vein to this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Roni Size Touching Down 11 Nov 2002
By Azdan
Format:Audio CD
Roni Size as some may say is the ‘king of drum and bass’, A producer that sits on a higher throne, on his own level. This time he has come up with an album where he lays down the law by taking full dictatorship on his own album. Roni himself produced Touching Down, with the help from various members from the “Full Cycle” camp and the CD is mixed entirely by Roni Size.
Touching Down includes tracks that Roni Size has featured during his DJ performances, such as "Sound Advice" “Playtime” and "Scrambled Eggs”. These tracks have been played out for many months and despite the bizarre names, “Scrambled Eggs” and “Sound Advice” are phrases that will roll off the tongue of any raving junglist. “Forget Me Knots” “Swings And Roundabouts” and “Vocoda Funk” have been played out on the dance floors lately by the big name DJs, and will most likely be heard much more in the near future.
For drum and bass peasants, this is a royal feast that all are invited to partake in. Touching Down is perfectly executed drum and bass, brimming with dark, menacing beats that are continuously dropped under contrastingly light melodies.
This is a very musical album with alot for your ears to take in. This is also an album all general music lovers should enjoy.

2.0 out of 5 stars Why did Mr Size have to mix it? 7 Nov 2003
By G man
Format:Audio CD
I'm a fan of drum and bass and regularly buy vinyl. I bought the singles from this album and really like them. After hearing this album I really have to wonder why the need was felt to mix it, especially the way it has been. It's all in time, but seems very messy and hurried, to my distaste. Sorry Roni...

4.0 out of 5 stars It's Good, But... 9 Nov 2002
Format:Audio CD
Size's Mercury Award winning New Forms set the standard years ago and this, his third LP, breaks away from the blues/jazz leanings of New Forms. He's come a long way and Touching Down is as good a mix album as any with the added bonus of being all Roni Size. Scrambled Eggs is the standout track and a track that's received a lot of airplay from DJ sets around England. Other than that, it's an album you need to listen to straight through - it's an hour well spent. The up-tempo mood of every track can get samey but for the Size purist it's another classic from the Bristol deck spinner. Buy it!
