Book Description

1 Mar 2001
The Promise of Gold...

On the heels of her greatest discovery, archaeologist Elysia Carlisle faced her most shattering betrayal. Her fiance absconded with the artifacts she had carefully collected, leaving her stranded and penniless. Gone was the map to an even greater treasure, a find she'd hoped would bring her glory before the imminent end of her career.

Now Ellie was left with nothing but a mysterious stone talisman, her only clue to the treasure's location. But someone possessed the talisman's mate -- Matt Devereaux, a handsome and infuriating gambler who also sought the lost fortune.

The Perils of Passion...

Devereaux suggested they join forces, but Ellie feared trusting any man. Yet she needed his skills to pursue her quest on the rugged New Mexico frontier, where the wild animals weren't as dangerous as gold-crazed outlaws.

But even more treacherous to her was Devereaux himself. The reckless rogue aroused her long-denied desire, threatened her good sense, and was growing perilously close to unlocking the secrets of another closely guarded prize -- her heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars Adventure, passion and action - it's all here! 11 Sep 2001
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Wild west historical romance - This is the first book I have read by Kristen Kyle, and I was not disappointed. The story centered on Elysia Carlisle an Archaelogist back in the 1890's. Suffering after the bretrayal of her fiance she goes in search of the Montezumsa's treasure, armed with a stone talisman and her memories of a stolen treasure map. Along comes Max Devereaux, a reckless gambler, owner of another talisman and determined to help and protect the self-reliant, Ellie, even when she doesn't want it! Passion and plenty of action in this tale, it's a real page turner. I recommend this book highly and am now looking for Kristen other adventure "The Last Warrior".

5.0 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT 19 Aug 2003
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
My second Kristen Kyle read is no disappointment. She has written a well-researched and glorious love story set against the not-so-old west. Ellie is a believable heroine -- the daughter of an Earl, struggling with the expectations of her class and sex at the turn of the century. Though it was a bit of a stretch to believe that her father and family would allow her such rampant freedom to pursue her passion for archaeology, it is nevertheless a necessary premise to allow our love story to unfold. Matt -- with his checkered and flawed past -- is, of course, the perfect hero and mate for Ellie. His steadfastness in guarding her despite her constant efforts to foil him is a wholly endearing quality. Love scenes are pleasant, not overly graphic -- thank goodness -- but nonetheless very effective. It was my second Kyle novel -- the first being Night Hawk -- the sci-fi romance. Trust me here, girls -- you will love her, whether she's writing about New Mexico or some galaxy far far away. Her pen strikes straight to the heart.

3.0 out of 5 stars good writing but the heroine:(..... 24 Jan 2006
By retroredux - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
The premise, a female archelogist, great, right? The story started well, but after a series of stupid, naive and annoying events by the heroine (including shooting at the hero,to "scare him away" while he's on horseback in a chasm!?!) I gave up.

I will probably try this writer again, as she seems competent, but I cannot stand "too stupid to live" heroines. Authors please take note-don't have your heroine do things in your book that you would consider reckless or stupid in real life.

The hero is fabulous so you may want to try this book.

3 stars for a good premise and a good try.

Touched by Gold by Kristen Kyle

Get ready to search for and explore all of the mysterious treasures that lie within the pages of this romping historical southwestern adventure. This story, which is loaded with bold action, narrow escapes and sexual tension, will take you on a fantastic journey through both desert and mountains in search of ancient treasure and mysterious medallions. However, keep in mind that the priceless discoveries that might be found may not be limited exclusively to their place in history.

Elysia, an English noble women and archeologist, is doomed to a future of marriage and tedium by her own promise to her father. In exchange for this promise, her father has given her one year and the chance to discover the "once in a life time find" that is every archaeologists dream. There is danger and deceit around every corner and it only serves to strengthen Elysia's determination to discover and preserve the ancient Aztec treasure before it is found and destroyed by the greed of her ex-fiancée.

Devereaux is honorable, patient and a gambler by trade with secrets that are best kept at bay. Getting the pretty Miss Ellie to trust him is proving to be the most challenging aspect of this adventure but a challenge that Matt is determined not to back down from. To honor the dying wish of his mentor and friend, Matt is also searching for the elusive treasure but has discovered that the real "find" lay hidden within his reluctant partner Elysia. Matt feels confident that with patience and determination he will break down her barriers that will yield the treasure of a lifetime.

Although this romance is heavily spiced with sexual tension the meat of the story remains with the well thought out plot and descriptions so detailed that they put you in the presence of the character. Kristen Kyle has proven time and again that she is capable of delivering an explosive story that does not shy away from the true grit of the setting. Treat yourself to the work of this master storyteller and discover for yourself the treasures that unfold.
