'Detailed, honest, captivating and often humorous.'--,

Product Description

Today people find the monastic life exceptionally compelling. The Rule of St Benedict is studied and applied far beyond the confines of the monastery. Following the huge success of the BBC TV series The Monastery, the monastic life has been seen as a means of healing, of disciplined living and of people coming to terms with themselves and their own personal truths. The age old wisdom of monastic life has a strong message of hope for our turbulent and often confused modern world. The contributors to "Touched by God" give deeply personal and honest accounts of what the monastic life is really like and how it brings them closer to God.

Changed lives 30 Sep 2009
Format:Paperback
It was most interesting to read the reasons that brought these 10 people to make the full commitment to a Monastic life. The backgrounds were totally varied and the reasons for the 'callings' equally differnt.

I like this book a lot. Each writer is totally honest about how they came to find their place in a monastery, about what they had done previously and how they felt called to be where they now are. Especially I like the fact, that you can put it down at the end of each contributors story and then look forward to picking it up again at a later date. I recommend this book, to those seeking to know more about monastic life, or their own life`s spiritual journey.

We should all thank God for lives like these 11 April 2009
By D. Kovacs - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
What on earth, in this day and age, compels one to enter monastic life? These ten monastic journeys, told with candor, wit, and lovingkindness, can help point the way. After reading them, I could only thank God that such people still exist, who have consecrated their lives to God and who live a life of prayer, for all of us and for all creation. Not that monastic life is heavenly bliss all the time, as these stories make clear. On the contrary -- like any part of life (such as marriage, family, work, friendship, or the humdrum of doing endless chores and errands)...monastic life also brings with it everything from boredom, frustration, pain, and suffering, in addition to love, joy, peace, and fulfillment. We can all learn from these stories -- and one thing I've learned is the importance of family church-going and/or Catholic education. Every single one of the contributors was raised with either one or both. The final point of importance is that, even though the number of nuns and monks has declined quite a bit in the last 40 years, there has also been a phenomenal growth of interest in Benedictine life and the Christian contemplative path in general. As long as journeys like those recounted in this book continue to be taken, the monastic way will stay alive and well. May God grant it!
