—Karen Robards

With One Touch of Scandal, acclaimed New York Times bestselling author Liz Carlyle arrives at Avon Books and launches a breathtaking new historical romance series centered around the Zeno Society, a mysterious fraternity of dangerous—and dangerously attractive—men. Fans of Amanda Quick and Gaelen Foley’s Inferno Club novels will be swept away by One Touch of Scandal, a sensuous tale with a distinct gothic flavor—the story of an imperiled beauty accused of a heinous crime…and the dark lord who risks his most carefully protected secrets to come to her rescue.

More About the Author

During her frequent travels to London, Liz always packs her pearls, her dancing slippers, and her whalebone corset, confident in the belief that eventually she will receive an invitation to a ball or a rout. Alas, none has been forthcoming. While waiting, however, she has managed to learn where all the damp, dark alleys and low public houses can be found.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really enjoyed it 2 April 2011

I always look forward to new Liz Carlyle books - I enjoy the more unusual time period and the fact that many of the characters are not top of the society tree is refreshing.

Maybe this wasn't the best but all I can say is that I really enjoyed the unfolding story and couldn't put it down (which was rather inconvenient). I was left wondering how long I would need to wait until the next one.

The only downside was the awful cover: so inappropriate for the story. Some publishers are starting to wise up to the fact that buyers are put off by, rather than attracted to, these lurid covers. Hopefully more will follow suit soon.

2.0 out of 5 stars Boring 2 May 2011

What a disappointment! LC's new Victorian trilogy is kicked off with a really dull first novel.

Grace Gauthier is a governess who is about to get engaged to her employer when someone kills him. When Grace is suspected of his murder she turns to Lord Ruthveyn for help. He is a part-Indian war hero who agrees to help her. Ruthveyn is a dark and brooding kind of hero. He has psychic visions, dark secrets and seems to be an opium addict. He and Grace quickly become lovers as they work together to prove her innocence.

This book just dragged. The plot was far too predictable with some events that were simply unbelievable. The characters were very shallow. Ruthveyn was a let down. I couldn't warm to a drug addict who is obsessed with sex. I found the tantric-style sex scenes very unsexy and pretty icky - totally lacking realmpassion and romance. The paranormal element seemed very contrived and unnecessary.

I'm so disappointed. All of LC's books have been keepers for me until this one. I will buy the next (The Bride Wore Scarlet) but will very regretfully give up on her if she is now turning her hand to churning out poorly plotted formulaic romances.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not her best but still decent 17 Oct 2010

Liz Carlyle is my favourite romance novelist. Since my first couple of Liz Carlyle books I have collected them religiously and always wait anxiously for her new releases. This new book though a good historical romance novel and better than many others in the genre is not as engaging as her previous novels. In my opinion the development of the romantic relationship was not executed well enough. It was treated in a more shallow and brief way than in her previous novels. The book was focused more on the mystery/suspense and psychic themes than of the relationship and character developement of the main protagonists. This book denied the reader an emersion in a great romance story from its tentative begginings, through the lovers' character revelations, angsts and issues, all the way to the glorious happily-ever-after. Which to my mind is the best part and the best indicator of a great romance novel. I hope the other two books planned for this trilogy will follow her previous genius.

There comes a time in every woman’s life, perhaps, when she realizes that whatever it is she’s been clinging to—her pride, her virtue, or perhaps just her sanity—really isn’t worth hanging on to anymore. Or perhaps she just meets the one thing that’s well worth throwing it away on. "e;
