About the Author
Cathy Clamp was 35 when the fiction writing bug bit her. Although always a competent legal and technical writer, the idea muse ignored her completely. It wasn't until she met future friend and partner Cie Adams that things began to click. Her friend's brain was the idea muse's nesting site! Cie was blessed (or some would say cursed) with one or more full book plots a day! Cathy quickly realized where her bread was buttered. She did learn she possessed a skill in writing romance and action scenes, while her partner concocted storylines and richly diverse characters. Within 18 months of the start of their partnership, they had written five books, and now have two accepted for publication! Cathy lives outside of Brady, TX, with her husband, Don, (also a brilliantly gifted idea man for suspense and espionage) and their four dogs.
C.T. Adams happily resides in Texas with a teenage son and pet cats. Office work provided a living while she pursued the goal of becoming a novelist. Forming the partnership with Cathy was the catalyst that led to publication. Cie provides a wildly vivid imagination, while Cathy's brilliant execution (pun intended, she writes vicious action scenes), editing, and business acumen gives the partnership the impetus to get writing projects off of the "drawing board" and into the hands of the readers. The partners have two books currently accepted for publication. Six years ago, Kate Reilly's fiancée turned her over to the vampire parasites who call themselves the Thrall. Kate survives the attack by the master parasite and manages to kill him. But the bite, coupled with her own psychic ability, has transformed her. Now the local Thrall queen wants to make Kate her successor - whether she wants it or not. Kate finds herself in a fight not just for her life, but her body and soul. One of the few people willing to help her is werewolf Tom, a firefighter she only just met. There is a lot of mutual attraction, but can she trust him after what her fiancée did to her?
There are a lot of things that speak for this novel: It has an intelligent story, which says a lot, because after 1001 vampire stories, it takes a lot to write something that you haven't read a hundred times already. This type of parasite is really interesting and a lot more scary than your average vampire. Add to that a black sense of humour, great characters and well-written action, and you're in for a really entertaining and enjoyable book. It's darker than the Tales of the Sazi (Hunter's Moon and Moon's Web) by the same authors, but fun nontheless. If you enjoy Laurell K. Hamilton before she turned into a writer of Erotica, this should be the book for you. I will definitely get any other books about Kate Reilly and am happy that I discovered these authors.

Although this was a well-written book, I found it quite difficult to get into. As with Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews (which I really liked) this book has a different perpective on vampires - they are parasites which infect human hosts by attaching themselves to the host's brain stem and live for up to about 12 years. For some reason I really didn't take to this idea but the character's were interesting, and that's why I'm giving this one three stars.

The best part about this book was the interesting take on vampires. It was refreshing to see them represented as parasites, rather than soul-less sexy dudes. (Although there's nothing wrong with the sexy dude in romance novels, I must say.)
Overall, though, I thought it was confusing and disjointed. There were a lot of details and loose ends that never popped up again or got resolved by the end. The plot, rather than being well-crafted, seemed sort of seat-of-the-pants, like it wasn't really thought out before the book was written and just flowed as the writing moved.
The concept of the series is interesting but the editing was horrible. Vampires aren't really vampires but are parasites that invade a human's body and make them a Host. They are known as the Thrall. The human population is divided into two categories, Prey and Not-Prey. The Thrall is connected to every human they feed from and have a Queen just like a hive of bees. Unlike vampires, these creatures can only inhabit a body for a few years. The main character in the series, Kate, is a psychic that was bitten by one of the Thrall but wasn't turned thus making her Not-Prey. Problem is their Queen is dying and they want Kate to replace her. Kate spends the entirety of the book trying to keep her friends and family safe because Queen Monica is using them as leverage. It's difficult to hide when the Thrall are all connected and speak telepathically. It reminded me of the Jasmine storyline on the series Angel. I liked the characters in the book and though I have it I'm not itching to read the next book in the series. I will, however, put it in my to read pile. I'll get to it eventually
