Product Description

Product Description

Three short stories that delight in the macabre, the gruesome and the grotesque.

Channel Six: a man finds himself isolated and alone in an unfamiliar post-Communist country, with only the television for company. But what are the images on Channel Six? What do they mean? Who is the man in the hospital bed?

Z: a bite, a fever, and a man becomes trapped in the living prison of the undead. What horrors lie in wait for the sentient living dead? What gruesome impulses impel their rotting limbs?

The Great Meliakoff: the world's greatest magician is giving his final performance, but why is he going into retirement? Can he really bring a woman back from the dead, as he claims? And just what role does the strange dwarf Azamat have to play?

This triptych of horror fiction will delight die-hard ghouls and fearful newcomers alike.

Around 9,500 words.

I'll start this review with two important caveats:

1. The author is a good friend
2. I'm terrible at reviewing books

As a p.s. to point 1, I paid for the books myself and read them without any prompting.

I really enjoyed these shorts, particularly the Channel 6 story. It was full of a creepy feeling that something bad was coming.

I'd absolutely recommend these stories to anyone. Turn off the lights and hide in the wardrobe...

Horror has always lent itself well to short-story collections from Edgar Allan Poe onwards. Since fear of the unknown and unsaid can be as frightening as any description, a good horror author can use the reduced pages to build suspense without a lengthy denouement. Although three short stories is probably more popular in movies -'Tales of terror', 'Grim prairie tales' , 'Spirits of the dead' et al - here we have an excellent and varied collection. I won't go into details without spoiling the plots, but let me just say that 'Channel 6' has a creeping paranoia, aptly written in a Graham Greene style first-person with terse, claustrophobic discomfort. 'Z' is brutal and rhythmic, and the 'The Great Meliakoff' has expansive, rolling Eastern European prose in the manner of Dostoyevsky. Excellent varied writing, will look out for more!
