'Pearson's military theories have their basis in some serious academic study' (Independent. )

Product Description

In this brilliant book, Simon Pearson plots our future; one full of uncomfortable possibilities governments fear to face. He takes us from today’s world where cruise missile diplomacy underlines the dominance of the West to 2006 when an Islamic Alliance dares to challenge it.

Russia experiences a second revolution, across Europe the hope of the new millennium is lost in economic and policy failures, the USA leads a purposeful NATO as the de facto world policeman and a single figure emerges to unite Islam. The world staggers towards inevitable war...

The book takes us from 2001 through the breakdown of the world as we know it to global conflict. The author shows great political awareness, about modern and "possible" near future poilical events. It could be seen as a wake up call as to potential consequences of present day actions. The technology and military awareness is also excellent, though can be technical, but, as a former memeber of the armed forces, it was very accurate. The book rolls along at a fast pace, switching to differnt parts of the world as events unfold. All in all an excellent read, and thoroughly recomended.

For those of you wonderring what would happen if another large scale war were to break out in our lifetime, here's one rather disturbing answer. The basic story is NATO versus a united Islam; the prize : Israel. But this is vastly over simplifying the book. Simon Pearson does not simply write about a set piece conflict; rather he devotes fully the first half of the work to background and small local conflicts leading up to the latest "War that has to end all wars". Amazingly detailed throughout the book reads in style, exactly like a recent history of the Gulf war, or Bosnia conflict, complete with photograph sections and long eye witness accounts, even taking extracts from books written by eyewitnesses to the events yet to happen. All this is based very firmly in science fact. This is not a fanciful tale of war in the distant future but a careful study of current socio-political climates and trends, which have then been extrapolated very slightly, with seemingly minor factors affecting the big picture. In short a must read for anyone interested in warfare or the military, if only to give you an understanding of the knife edge walked by large international bodies, and the dire consequences of underestimating an enemy.

The author does a brilliant job of illustrating how a few minor, albeit significant political and military decisions could lead to a conflict of such scale in such a short time period. Very thought provoking and well researced, it left me thinking 'What If?'.
