Book Description

14 Sep 2012
Of course, it's not just the owner of 'Fenton' from the infamous YouTube clip of the Labrador chasing deer in Richmond Park many dog owners struggle to manage their dogs, and the vast majority of people who need help have one simple but overwhelming problem. Their dog won't come back when they call him. The book is divided into three parts: 1. Preparation all the information you'll ever need in order to prepare and support yourself and your dog as you work through the training programme, including information on how your dogs learn, practical training with rewards and beyond training. 2. A detailed Recall Training Programme complete with exercises to work through. In other words the 'how to' section of the book where you'll learn puppy recall, pre-recall for older dogs, basic recall, on location training and ultimately recall for life. 3. The problem solving section, where you can discover why you got into difficulties in the past and learn how to avoid making the same mistakes again in the future. Enjoy your training journey and have fun with your dog!

Product Description

Review

'I've no hesitation in recommending Total Recall to anyone setting out on training a puppy for the first time, or even the tenth time. It is a book that is likely both to change attitudes and lead to more sympathetic training, which is no bad thing.' Shooting Times

'The book's strength lies in clear, engaging writing and, in particular, in its structured exercises designed to build a recall from scratch'. Dogs Today

'Many people struggle to get their dog to come back to them when they call it, especially a young dog, and Pippa Mattinson aims to solve this problem for dog owners... In "Total Recall" the author offers a real insight into the mind of the dog and explains why dogs behave the way they do.' Countryside

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally Brilliant! 20 Oct 2012

I can't say enough good stuff about this book! If you buy no other dog training book - get this one! As a trainer for more years than I care to remember, I moved away from the awful "yank and yell" style training that was prevalent over 25 years ago. At that time there were only two books about dog training that I could lay my hands and they were pretty useless, with emphasis on choke chains and punishment. (These were pre-Internet days!) There are now many good books about positive training theory and practice but in my view this is by far the best! In her book Pippa has echoed many of the positive training techniques that I've been using for some time, but not only that, there's an absolute mine of information that is totally new to me which has inspired me to do more training with my own dogs, and indeed my new puppy which arrives soon. I have been trying for years to impress upon owners in my puppy classes that their young puppies won't simply follow them forever when let off lead, and that after a period of time (which Pippa calls the "Safety Response") they will stray further and further away. Then, in the absence of training will become unruly and difficult to "capture". Until now, I had never found any written information to back up my theory - but it's all here in this book. Forget about "pack rules", forget about "quick fixes"; read this book and have fun whilst training with your dog!

5.0 out of 5 stars gooddogs 15 Oct 2012

This book is a must-have on every dog owner's shelf, with its clear, step-by-step approach written in easy language and with attractive photographic illustrations. The book follows Pippa's tried and tested reward based training methods and it is obvious she has researched dog behaviour thoroughly. At the moment I have 2 dogs of different breeds, ages and with reasonably good recall. After following the appropriate advice in the book, I have succeeded in improving their recall even further and the dogs enjoy their time off the lead even more as a result.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you have a dog then you should read this book 12 Nov 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is excellent. It is very user friendly and laid out in a manner that makes it easy to follow. I can also state that the approach seems to be working.

My English Springer Spaniel is a little wayward being a working dog and a hunting breed. This book has helped me cement my approach to dog training. It is the book that provided me with the missing link between books such as Joe Irving's Training Spaniels and John Bradshaw's "In Defense of Dogs". Many gun dog trainers subscribe to harsh and out dated modes of training that did not sit well with me. Pippa takes a different approach which is positive, reward based operant training. I got this book after reading a review in the Shooting Times and it is well worth it. I am also applying the same techniques to retrieving and to motivating the dog to do good. We have supported this book with a trainer from the gundog club and the results after 4 weeks are really promising.
