As an avid Michel Thomas fan, I was very pleased to obtain a copy of the new look Total German course that replaces the older German Foundation Course. Basically, it's the original 8-hour Foundation Course plus the first two hours of the German Vocabulary Course, also from the older range. The second half of the Vocab Course I presume is part of the new "Perfect" set, which replaces the old "Advanced" Course.

When I learned about the rebranding of the series, I have to admit I was rather sceptical, especially concerning the addition of the new CD-Rom visual content. I think the method works so well because it is all audio but at the same time I was willing to give the new interactive content a fighting chance, especially as I sometimes cheat when using the Method by writing my own notes as I go along (something the Method forbids but it helps me remember better). So what can I say about the new content? Well, for a start, I notice a couple of other reviewers have complained about how difficult it was to load the content onto their computers. I don't know if they have PCs or Macs but I have a MacBook and I also experienced some problems getting the software to work but when the MacBook did finally agree to run it, I found it enjoyable and actually helped reinforce what I had learnt during Michel's 8-hour course. Thus I found the CD-Rom content to be incredibly useful - especially for German, which is the hardest language I've ever tried to learn and the one I've had to concentrate on the most.

Normally Michel Thomas' material is of a very high standard indeed, and honestly, the audio part of this set is up to his usual stellar standards. I'm using it to help my son get through his GCSE's, and he's loving it.

But the interactive CD rom is an absolute nightmare. I tried installing it, using all the advice given to me on the website, and all that happened was that my computer crashed... And I do mean crashed, I couldn't even turn the screen on.

I thought perhaps it was my particular computer, so I tried loading it onto other computers, with similar problems. I've managed to get them up and running again, but this took HOURS of my time, and a lot stress.

The CD rom is disappointing in the extreme, and while I'm sure it's a valuable resource if you can get it to run, as it stands it's a little bomb waiting to go off in your computer.

I REALLY hope that there is some better version of the software coming out soon. I was really disappointed, because I expect only the best from the Michel Thomas franchise.

I'm a huge fan of the Michel Thomas method, I have worked through a fair few of his courses and I'm convinced with the method. I'd give the method alone five stars; it is the best way to learn, without a doubt. However, the new change in presentation and content puzzles me somewhat. I have always been good at learning just by listening, but I do understand the importance for some, more visual learners to get some computer based exercises. It wasn't that the visual content was bad, it was in fact relatively good, but there was a great deal of hassle loading the software, by the end of it, it had taken about an hour and a half of turning my computer off and on again whilst it failed to load! DO NOT be put off by this though, it is a minor glitch, but the content is good at the end of it! My main issue with this course is that, other than the computer software it isn't much different at all, basically the content has been shuffled around and they put a bigger price tag on it.

In conclusion, the content is great, as usual, but the computer software installation process did irritate me somewhat. The visual exercises are good, they do give in another dimension, it does cater for another learning style, and although I was satisfied with just listening, I can see the value of the new material.

For people who are new to the Michel Thomas method, it's wonderful, I'm sure you've read many success stories and read the reviews online, so I don't need to reiterate that. In my opinion it is the best learning experience and really does work, but it does require some effort on your part, you can't just listen and leave it at that.

I have to say I am really enjoying this course. The way I use it is to listen to it while driving in the car. You do need to have a reasonably long journey and in one 'session' I listen to no more than one CD, I am guessing it last 30 or 40 minutes. After a rest, I then repeat it until I have a really good grasp of the material before moving on to the next.

The way the teaching happens is an instructor and two students on the CD. You take the place of a third and join in with the questions he asks them. There is plenty of time for you to work out your answers in parallel.

The course is quite humerous in that he amusingly chides the students, they make similar mistakes to me, but they also come up with amusing comments from time to time.

I have not involved myself with the computer loadable CD at this stage. It appears to cause other reviewers problems, but as I said I am very happy with what I have and am making steady progress. Yes, it is expensive but I find it a far less stressful way of learning the spoken language. Just a word of warning. If you want strong written skills this is probably NOT the course for you, but otherwise, go for it!
