I'm sorry to say I ended up having to use this book for a course, and can only agree with the other reviewer. When will the publishers of English learning books (for this is not the case with any of the German or Italian books I've used to learn from) finally wake up and realize that people sign on for language courses to learn a LANGUAGE, not to do Gender Studies 101. The book is full of those 1980s/90s gender cliches: for example, asking classes if men or women are better at cooking driving, who feels more pain, who does housework, etc. The number of awkward situations I had were too many too count. And if someone reveals in the ensuing discussion that they don't follow leftist ideology, or they do follow the latest research on relations in the MODERN world, and not feminist myths from the 60s, then the group harmony is seriously disturbed.

Also, like the Headway books, they seem desperate to find female heroes who beat the men at everything they do, even if they have to grossly exaggerate or even invent information. We learn on page 15 for example about the Brazilian woman racing driver who was 'beating the men at their own game' back in 2001 and was supposedly going to show men how driving is done. Doing an Internet search, as I've done with the Headway books, once more reveals the embarrassing truth. Facts blown out of all proportion or invented when necessary, all with the grim determination of proving modern gender ideology to be correct - women can do anything better than men, while if men do something better than women, it's because they had an unfair advantage.

All I can say is 'Wake up JJ Wilson and Antonia Clare!' People who buy this book want to learn English, NOT whatever gender ideology you're trying to promote. Language learning books MUST be politically neutral. If you don't agree with that, why don't you concentrate on writing books on gender studies, and leave the rest of us to learn languages?

Please don't buy this book.

I had to teach with Total English Advanced last academic year and it made my life a misery. The readings and listenings are dull and inauthentic and the grammar and vocabulary exercises are repetitive and unhelpful. The themes, like "Issues" or "Challenges", sound like they were thought up by a local government committee. I nearly wept whenever I opened the book and began to plan my lessons.

I don't work for a publisher, but I have to recommend New English File as an alternative series. I only have experience of the Upper-Intermediate book, but it is highly engaging and very well thought out. Someone really used their imagination for every unit, which means the teacher can get on with focusing on the language content rather than thinking "how am I going to make this lesson interesting?".
