David Baldacci has written several fine thrillers including "Last Man Standing" and "Absolute Power". "Total Control" has several of the same features, notably a complex plot whose contours only become clear as the reader moves further into the book. Unfortunately, the writing just isn't as sharp as in Baldacci's better works. In particular, the characters are less well drawn and behave in irritatingly improbable ways. This makes it hard to care about them, or how the conundrums set up by the author are resolved. Unlike his earlier works, I found it a real challenge to finish.

For: complex, puzzling plot. Against: not gripping enough.

At the time of purchase I didn't realise this book was written in the mid 90s so the "new" technology that's key to the plot is fantastically out of date. floppy discs, dial up modems and references to some curious beast called the internet are often funny because of the fact the technologies are so out of date. I'm sure when written the new technologies added a certain excitement/drama to the story but this is lost now.
That all said I still really enjoyed the plot, characters and book as a whole.

I originally found David Baldacci as a writer through an Amazon recommendation and I have avidly read all his stuff since. His writes very well, with good flow and imaginative use of personal feeling descriptions. This book is up there with his best. Good strong characters put into traumatic situations where we feel their problems and grief and then share their doubts as they encroach on their psyche. A good plot, not overly complicated but with a lot happening and progressing with the book - and some surprises. Definitely worth reading and worth buying.

I am thrilled to have come across this book. It relates the story of a normal everyday American couple and their little girl who get entangled in a corrupt conspiracy. The terrific character and plot development make it utterly believable and full of suspence. It is an excellent read.

I have just finished reading this book which although a little slow to get into, soon took me by the scruff of the neck and pushed me through it's pages towards the end. An end which you knew was sure to come but did not no when and indeed how. Should this become a film and they stick to the original plot, it will take the industry(film) by storm. I have read all but 'Saving Faith', which I hope to get hold of soon, and would class David Baldacci as one of my favourite modern day authors. I do hope that there is more of his books in the pipeline.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book after it was recommended to me by a friend. It starts off slowly but quickly picks up. What I liked about this thriller was that the picture and all the pieces were slowly gathered up and you just about learn all the details as soon as the characters do. I can just envisage this being converted to film, but who'd be the leading lady? I have to grumble about the ending though - too perfect for me!

One of the most interesting plotlines in the David Baldacci books I've read so far. The whole thing turns on a multi-billion dollar merger of two software companies, with the lawyer handling the legals being married to one of the key employees of one of the companies. Not sure how that'd play in real life, but it shouldn't get in the way of a good story, and this IS a good story. Kept me quiet for hours, so my wife wants me to give it 5 stars.

But no. Not quite. :-)

This book was lent to me by a person who knew I loved reading Grisham. Well they were right. This is another book which is a page turner. If this is Baldacci's style, I will be reading all of his works.

In this book we watch as a typical American family is faced with the greed of a powerful corporation. You have a husband who is an executive at an technology firm. And his wife, a mother and attorney of the firm working on an important merger of two companies. One of which is the one he works for. The husband is working on making enough money so his wife can be a stay-at-home mother. Then he disapears with a cloud of alegations over his head. and his wife is left to clear his name.

This book has all the excitment you would expect in a thriller. And you will turn the pages fast, looking to see what happens next. And even though you know there is no way she could posibbly beat the odds she is up against in real life, you will stay engrossed in this story.
