Product Description

Official PlayStation 2 Magazine

"Hugely playable management sim with an innovative link to FIFA 2004 that takes it to another level."

Manufacturer's Description

Total Club Manager 2004, from the makers of FIFA, puts you straight into the dugout of your favourite football team. Whether you're fighting for league survival or challenging to win the championship, TCM 2004 will put you in total control. Manage your club the way you think it should be managed. Managerial duties include buying and selling players in the most realistic transfer market to date, creating your own training sessions, disciplining players or granting them bonuses, dealing with national media and, most importantly, keeping the fans happy. Total Club Manager 2004 realistically portrays the pressures of the modern game. Do the job well and you could see yourself as the future national manager. If you fail, it may be time to start looking for another club.

I have played many such games but this ranks as the worst ever, you could write a book on whats wrong with it, I have now played 3 seasons and so far 3 of my players have won a million in a quiz show, 8 have fallen out with each other over stealing detergent commercials from each other, I have had around 20 instances of angry parents causing a riot..... is this a football management sim or a Big brother sim????
The menus are not intuitive (try to find out which position you are in your champions league group)
The values of players are a joke, Michael Owen 75million... I am a Liverpool fan but I doubt you would even get half that for him Van der Vaart recently touted for around 20 million, hey you can get him here for under 3
I also noticed some strange things.. like players training non stop even once the season has ended I know they are high paid prima donnas but come on give the lads a week or 2 off
Training is also too complex, remeber the good old days when the lads have a couple of games of fives then off down the boozer.... no chance here you have to monitor them every day and make sure they are meeting their training goals and objectives.
In short if you want a football management sim then go for Championship manager, it has its faults but at least there is an element of realism in it, if you are a CM die hard and were looking for something a bit different then look elswhere

Could do better 24 Jan 2004
Having only played football management games on PC I wasn't sure what to expect, and found myself expecting to see and do things which didn't exist, however, I did get used to it fairly quickly.

The menus are easy use and there are plenty of choices to be made in buying/selling players, tactics, sorting out the back-room staff, and developing the ground, although more information on players and easier hiring of staff might help.

What is annoying is the length of time taken to load a match, if you wish to see what is happening, and you still can't change players positions or tactics during the match, and there is also a ridiculous amount of sending-offs and bizarre football playing antics from your team.

In the end I skipped the matches and tried to concentrate on managing the club which was fine until after 10 seasons the game stopped, gave me a final rating of how I had performed, and sent me back to the start of the game!

This was infuriating as I had been managing a club for a few seasons and had started to increase the club facilities, get better players and sort out my tactics. Not happy.

Unless there is a way to play seasons ad infinitum then the game has lost its appeal already as where is the fun in taking a lowly team to the very top, only to have your ambitions cut short?

I did get limited enjoyment from the game, but unless the irritating bits are changed I can see no reason to take a chance and get a different football management game for the PS2, or even an improved version of TCM2004.

It's back to the PC for me.

I think we should all know by now that the PSOne and PS2 doesn’t do football management games and if you want proof, just buy this.

As my girlfriend bought it in a last-minute 'what shall I buy you' moment and as a Pro-Evolution Soccer fanatic, I was gonna need some convincing of this games credentials. FIFA fan I am not.

As soon as the game started I had that inevitable sinking feeling - like a turkey that's been spotted by the local butcher on a cold December morning.

Why have dance music on a management game? Anyway, the match engine - laughable, the ball pings about like an over-wound pinball machine and the players seem to run in varying directions. By this time I was perspiring with embarrassment, the blind was up so any passer-by could see me playing this inane drivel so I turned it off and my bank account was reconciled with my money.
