Stylish, Reliable and Indispensable, 13 May 2003
I bought the Toshiba e330 Pocket PC at the end of last year, after losing my previous PDA - a Cassiopeia. The first thing that grabs you about the Toshiba, setting it apart from others on the market is the styling. The e330 is incredibly thin for its specification, and looks like a professional tool, rather than a brick. After using the e330 on a daily basis, one of the greatest benefits is reliability. It is rarely necessary to perform a soft reset, and in more than six months of owning it, it has crashed on me just once. Compared with the Cassiopeia, which would frequently crash, the e330 has proved itself as not only stylish, but reliable. The relatively large screen on the e330 is clear and bright, and the colours are sharp. Photographs and small videos look excellent on the display. One small downside that I have found is that the alignment of the screen is sometimes off - particularly at the very top of the screen where the volume control is. Regular re-alignment of the screen via the simple setup utility incuded in Pocket Windows 2002 quickly cures this problem. The software which comes with the e330 is as expected with a Pocket PC - along with Microsoft ActiveSync 3.5, you get the standard Pocket Office suite, with Word, Excel and Outlook - making transferring documents to and from your PC a doddle. I've downloaded a number of other applications to the e330 with little trouble. As well as an on-screen keyboard and character recogniser (a la Palm's Grafiti system), the e330 has Microsoft's Transcriber software pre-installed. This is a handwriting recognition tool that allows you to write directly onto the screen of the Pocket PC. It does a great job straight out of the box and you can train it to understand your own individual writing further. Battery life on the e330 is fine, but not outstanding - this has never been a particular issue for me as I use the the docking cradle to power up between meetings during the day. Having owned a Palm and a Cassiopeia, I have found the e330 has been my best PDA purchase by far. With the current range on the market, if I could choose again, I would definitely buy a Toshiba.
