Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

The XDE600 produces stunning, near HD 1080p picture quality from standard definition DVDs – breathing new life into your DVD collection. Toshiba’s XDE technology goes beyond standard upscaling by including three additional video processes, detail enhancement, intelligent colour and contrast enhancement, for sharper, clearer images with richer, more vibrant colours and contrast. The XDE600 includes three picture modes – sharp, colour and contrast – which enable viewers to ensure that the player produces the best possible picture based on the type of content being viewed. In addition to near HD 1080p picture quality USB connectivity is also included for DivX, JPEG and MP3 playback.

XDE Technology Explained

Whereas the majority of upscaling players simply extend image resolution, Toshiba’s XDE technology includes three additional video processes to deliver sharper, cleaner images with richer, more vibrant colours and contrast:

Detail enhancement feature sharpens image edges while simultaneously reducing 3D noise.

Intelligent colour enhances blue and green shades, which can often lose vivacity during the upscaling process, without compromising the integrity of the overall picture.

Contrast enhancement improves contrast in dark areas whilst maintaining brightness in others. The result is a startlingly rich, crisp image from a standard definition source.

The XDE600 includes three picture modes – sharp, colour and contrast – which enable viewers to ensure that the player produces the best possible picture based on the type of content being viewed.

Sharp mode offers improved detail enhancement that takes content one step closer to high definition – creating sharper edges and ensuring that detail is more visible. Unlike traditional sharpness control, XDE technology analyses the entire picture and adds edge enhancement precisely where it’s needed.

Colour mode makes the colours of nature stand out with improved richness. Blues and greens are more vivid and lifelike, making the XDE600 perfect for watching nature and wildlife documentaries. Colour mode combines the improvement in colour with the detail enhancement of sharp mode, delivering outstanding performance during outdoor scenes.

Contrast mode is designed to make details in darker scenes or foregrounds more clearly visible without the typical “washing out” that can occur with traditional contrast adjustment. Perfect for dark scenes where detail may be difficult to notice, contrast mode is also combined with sharp mode to provide a sharper viewing experience.

Using XDE technology, the XDE600 is able to upscale images to 720p, 1080i and 1080p, making it perfectly suited to any kind of HD ready TV.

USB Connectivity
View your digital stored content via USB. The Toshiba XDE600 features an integrated USB input, making it easy to play back DivX movies or JPEG photos directly from a USB key or USB connected device. This eliminates the need to burn DVDs from a laptop or home computer and makes the XDE600 the ideal product with which to view your saved digital content.

HDMI
1080p represents the highest possible screen resolution available today. Allowing up to 1 million more pixels than 720p resolution televisions to be used at any time, 1080p resolution provides an amazing level of detail and colour; picture quality which needs to be seen to be believed.

With the popularity of high definition 1080p televisions rapidly increasing, so is the importance of cables which are capable of transmitting high definition content from source to screen. Faster, more efficient data transfer is enabled by the HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) connection.

Pure, uncompressed streams of digital data are transmitted, allowing you to enjoy the benefits of the highest level of sound and image quality. Simply connect the HDMI cable from the DVD player to your TV and enjoy pure digital picture and sound quality. Currently HDMI is the only commonly available connection that can deliver 1080p resolution from a video source (such as a DVD player) to a television. By delivering clear digital audio and video via a single cable, HDMI dramatically simplifies cabling and helps provide the highest-quality home theatre experience. The XDE600 upscaling DVD player comes equipped with HDMI output, allowing this crystal clear transition of content to the screen with the best possible picture and audio quality.

'Hey, I Like It' 4 May 2010
This will be short and sweet.

I basically bought this unit for one reason and that was the USB port at the front of the machine. I wasn't to bothered about 1080p upscale and I didn't know what XDE Technology was at all. I had read the user reviews and found them extremely negative regarding flimsy trays, light weight, to plastic, to small, not user friendly etc etc. Seriously what are you all talking about? I looked at lots of DVD players and all had similar issues. I infact like the size, weight, look and as for the user friendly issues?? I'm confused... pop DVD in, play DVD. Press Menu, set options to what you desire and hey presto. With todays internet resources you don't even need instruction manuals in my opinon, everything is just plug and play.

Anyway so far the unit has been amazing. I can view pics, video and play music through the USB port and the DVD's I've played look great through the HDMI socket.

Oh and the USB port does play 'AVI' files in case anyone was wondering.

GOOD PLAYER 19 Mar 2010
"Positives-
Great picture and sound. i linked mine up with an HDMI cable from That Cable- excellent
Downsides;
Would have liked the unit to have been full size, being light it can skate around
Operations such as power on and drawer out take a long time compared to ther DVD players I have owned.
Overall though a good purchase and I Can see now how DVD picture quality is supposed to be, but now wondering how much better Blu ray may be ?"

The picture quality of the Toshiba xde 600 is great and I cannot fault it, the sound quality is good. Unfortunately the rest of it is pretty horrible. I have had Toshiba DBD players for several year going back to 2001 with the excellent toshiba sd 100e and I have to say that xde 600 is the worst one I have had. The main problem is that when you stop or turn off the dvd player the player defaults back to the beginning which is a huge pain and something I have not seen in DVD players for year. It gets even worse when you pause the dvd and disappear for 20 minutes. The player goes into power save mode and won't then play the dvd without turning the player off and on again. The player feels cheap espeacially the DVD tray which springs up and down when you touch it.

I in the past Toshiba's DVD players build quality and user friendliness was a major plus for me but now it is unbelievably bad. I have just taken the Toshiba back and bought the Sony DVPNS718h which is a much more user friendly player and even though the picture quality of the Toshiba is better the Sony wins hands down in most other ways.
