If you want hi-fi or cinematic quality sound you will not get it from the Toshiba Mini 3D Sound Bar II. Not being a hi-fi ‘expert’, I found the sound quality quite good & much, much better than that from the tv speakers. The bass sound from the wireless sub & the ‘sonic emotion absolute 3D audio processing’, in my opinion, works very well to give a reasonable, punchy & involved soundstage any where in the room. The sub has three bass levels & can, if wanted, be turned off completely. The 3D processing can also be turned off but this narrows the soundstage & sounded a bit flat to my ears.

The small size of the system is impressive & suits me as I don’t want large speakers & wires everywhere (obviously sound quality compromises are made). The sound bar sits nicely under the tv & takes up very little room plus the small (ish) neat sub, with its wireless connectivity, can be placed almost anywhere in the room. I had to experiment with placement before I decided where it worked best.

Setup is simple with the sub ‘pairing’ to the sound bar automatically. Connecting bluetooth devices, to stream media, is also easy & an excellent implementation. Connecting a laptop, phone, tablet or other bluetooth device is no problem & in seconds you can be listening to your music. There are HDMI ports (2 in, 1 out) on the soundar but I just use the optical out from my tv or line in for an iPod classic. The only strange feature I found was the LED colour system for the different functions (bass levels, 3D etc). Having said that after a bit of use it is easy to remember what the different coloured LEDs’ mean. The remote is a nice comfortable size &, with minimum buttons, uncomplicated. Both the sub & the sound bar need a mains socket which is something to bear in mind.

It's a pretty well-known fact that modern TVs don't have room for a decent pair of speakers. For those who don't have the cash or space to splash out on an amp and speakers, for full surround sound, a sound bar is a good alternative. But even they can be quite big, for my 32" TV set a full-size sound bar would be longer than the TV and overhang the cabinet. So when I saw this mini sound bar, I had to give it a go.

The unit needs one power socket, it comes complete with a subwoofer to enhance the bass sounds, which has a fixed cable to the sound bar itself. It comes with an audio cable, if your TV has left and right audio out sockets (red and yellow) then you are good to go. Optionally you can buy a optical audio cable (if your TV supports it), but I haven't tried this as the included cable is good enough for me. There is no HDMI on this model.

I positioned the bar directly under my TV which is recommended. If you have to place it left or right of the TV, there is a switch which allows you to redirect the sound to compensate. The tiny (credit-card sized) remote control switches the unit on/off (if there is no sound coming through it puts itself into standby mode) and can adjust the volume - I had the best results by putting the sound bar volume to max and using the TV volume control. Make sure you change your TV settings if applicable, so that it outputs to 'Audio' and doesn't use the TV speakers.

There are three settings: movie, music and games. My main aim was to be able to hear dialogue, especially when music is playing in the background as with many TV shows - the movie setting is fine for this. If you find yourself turning your TV volume UP when people are speaking (or mumbling!

Disappointed. It works well with my iPhone and when I play tunes from my iTunes library via the device using Bluetooth/wireless link, I get a lovely deep, room-filling sound (especially when I press the "3D" button on the remote!) Apart from that, however, a bit of a dead loss really. I have tried to connect to my TV using HMDI (bought a brand new cable especially!) and nothing at all happened. I then tried using a direct audio cable but all I get is a lot of static/hiss and poor quality reproduction of what is playing on the TV while I get nothing at all through the sound bar when I try to play my iTunes library via the Apple TV link to my TV. I phoned the Toshiba "Help" line and they could not help me either. They could not find my brand of TV (purchased 2 years or so ago via Amazon, but already delisted). I suspect that might be the problem (not high enough spec?) and shall keep the sound bar in anticipation of upgrading at some stage (although, to be honest, I would really like an "all-in" TV which will allow me to dispense with the growing accumulation of stuff around the TV (sound bar, woofer, Apple TV, Apple iPhone adapter (£40.00 - useless, as my broadband is so unreliable and cuts out when I am in the middle of watching a non-UK programme via my iPhone!) (Have gone over to using YouTube instead!)

I already had the Toshiba Mini 3D Sound Bar I before I got this, which on the whole I was satisfied with. For such a small form factor, I thought the general compromise on sound/output was a fair compromise. On some very bass-y tones there was distortion, but overall it was fine. However, having now upgraded to the model II now, I can immediately see and hear the improvements.

The size of the bar is still as streamlined as ever, so it takes up no extra surface space under my TV. The HDMI sockets are an added bonus, even though I am only currently using the regular line-in input from my TV. Bluetooth syncing with my phone is a coddle now that the bar is NFC compatible - one tap and I'm streaming my tunes, a brilliant feature.

The subwoofer comes with a very short power cable, which puzzled me for a second, until I realised it too is now wireless, so it can be located further away from the TV so as to maximise the surround sound style effect of the bass. Also, the tiny remote control from the model I has been improved with a decent sized unit that actually fits in your hand and is comfy to use.

Overall, a total improvement on the original that retains all the best parts of the first model. Well worth considering if you want to boost your TV sound without filling your living room with large speakers. If you already have the first model, still worth considering as an upgrade.
