I received this computer just prior to the Christmas selling season. I experienced one bad experience after the other including:
1) Skipped keys while typing slowing typing speed
2) Slightly cramped keyboard slowing typing speed
3) The touch icons worked inconsistently; sometime not at all
4) Some programs would download only with the mouse and not with the touchscreen
5) Toshiba's customer's service frequently couldn't solve my problem and escalated me to a higher level where they tried to sell me an expensive warranty plan
6) Difficulties using Apple I-Tunes; there were some incompatibilities
7) Since owning this computer, I was instructed by Toshiba to refresh my computer twice due to easy corruption of files

I never returned a computer before in my life; I couldn't wait to get rid of this one.

I have been a Toshiba user since my second laptop in 1995 which cost £3500!

This is being sent back for the following reasons:

I don't like Windows 8. I even downgraded Vista to XP which is what I still use.

The Touchpad is worse than useless. Because the buttons are integrated into the same bit as the 'mousy' bit, it is difficult to right or left-click without the cursor 'jumping' to a different part of the screen. Dragging is difficult for this reason too.

When you leave something open on the screen and close the lid, opening it up again you'll see that it's as though buttons were being pressed when the screen was closed. I had file manager open and when I closed the screen then opened it again a few minutes later, there were about 20 shortcuts created but worst of all, some files were being copied from one directory to another! If they were being deleted, I would not have been happy.

The glossy screen makes it difficult to see when you've got a window behind you with daylight coming in.

The only positive is the backlit keyboard.

I will be buying a non-touchscreen Toshiba laptop with Windows 7, non-reflective screen, separate buttons on the touchpad, and a backlit keyboard (along with SD card slot, bluetooth and at least one USB3 slot).

I bought this heap of junk just under a year ago. I have had nothing but problems with it from the word go. I've given up altogether now, and have taken the plunge, splashing out an an Apple Macbook instead. It comes tomorrow, so this is the last night that I'll have to use the Toshiba. I can't wait to see the back of it.

Let's get the one 'plus' point out of the way, so that I can get on with the moaning. The sound. Excellent. I'm a musician, and the sound quality on the Toshiba is fantastic. DVD's sound great on it, when you can actually find the media player on the thing, that is, and the picture quality for films n stuff is okay too. And that's the only thing to recommend this laptop.

Now to the minus points. Firstly, the operating system, Windows 8, is awful, no, make that diabolical, constructed by Satan himself. There's no reassuring 'start' icon in the bottom left-hand corner, which threw me straight away. The whole thing is all over the place, a completely incoherent mess which is made ten times worse if you try and navigate around the operating system via the touch-screen (which is completely chaotic). After a couple of days of Windows 8, I was already using my old laptop again, because it had Windows 7, which was so much more user-friendly. The new Toshiba spent a couple of months unused, upside down, and shoved under the sofa. Then the old laptop broke, and I was forced to start using it again, but only because I had no choice,

You can take a photo with the on-board camera on the Toshiba. Straight afterwards, you get the helpful message 'something went wrong with this photo', which in plain terms means that you can't save it. It's been like that since I bought the laptop. It's the same with videos. Forget it, you're wasting your time...

My review refers to the P845t model with an i3 processor, 6GB RAM & 640GB hard drive.

In my opinion these are the pros and cons of this machine -

Pros

- Stylish, metal feel case.
- Compact size but easy to work on and so much more portable than a 15.3" laptop - in fact, I think this machine is close to being a laptop/ultrabook hybrid but sports an integral optical drive.
- Good quality screen plus, the fact it is a touchscreen is a definite advantage with Windows 8 - you can't blame Toshiba for usability issues with Windows 8.
- I like the keyboard which is illuminated and has a good feel - yes, the keys are slightly closer together than on a 15.3" machine as this is a 14" device.
- The touchpad is great - it works a little differently to some but once you get the hang of it it's fine.
- The sound is very good - the best I've heard on a laptop.
- Once the power management is configured properly the battery life is quite good - a bit like a car's MPG, the manufacturer's figure is only attainable under ideal conditions.
- Overall, this machine has a quality feel and looks good whilst being easily portable by virtue of its weight and size.

Cons

- Sometimes not quite as fast as I expected with an iCore processor and 6GB of RAM, but I'm not sure whether that is because of Windows 8 plus, the fact is I'm used to a powerful desktop.
- Optimum screen viewing angle could be a bit wider.
- Quite expensive but it seems to be in a niche position in the market - there aren't many 14" touchscreen machines with an optical drive built in.
- Nothing else I can see at the moment.

Overall, a nice, compact machine which I've really taken to. Recommended.
