I hate being negative, in fact this is my first negative review on Amazon. I received the laptop in January 2009 as a present for my PhD. The laptop was only used for basic word documents and the internet, no games or anything like that are on the laptop so the space used was minimal. Problems first started in April, with the hard drive failing, this was initially covered by the warranty so I wasn't too upset at this point. Around 2 weeks after getting it back I opened my laptop to find a crack on the screen, like another reviewer who has previously posted I'm VERY careful with technology so I have no idea how this appeared. I phoned Toshiba who took it away, without telling me that I had to pay for the repair.
All went quiet for a while (mainly because I was abroad without my laptop), but this February my hard drive failed again. Toshiba refused to repair it without me paying, due to my warranty having expired. I explained that this part had failed previously and that they replaced it in April 2009 so surely it would have an extended warranty, even just for that part. Toshiba promptly explained that it only had a 90 day warranty when it was replaced, which is frankly insane. After giving in and having it repaired I now find myself with ANOTHER failed hard drive, all failures were due to mechanical errors (it's called the 'click of death' apparently). I've given up, this was my first Toshiba product and it has caused me loads of hassle. Luckily I backed everything up on an external hard drive since the 'Toshiba recovery disks' you create never work.
Sorry for the long (ish) review but I think it's necessary that people know that this laptop is utter rubbish. Toshiba are useless and I will never buy a laptop from them again. I would avoid at all costs.
